Looks interesting. Seems like I remember an episode of VH1 BEHIND THE MUSIC that covered this as well.

Hopefully it will attempt to dispel some of the misguided beliefs people have developed about the band, at least when the band that was led by Ronnie Van Zant.

Love Skynyrd, but is there really anything new to say that hasn't already been covered in other specials/documentaries?

I guess we will find out tonight. :D
Heck, the possibility of new footage is enough for me to watch.

I watched the show Saturday night, I thought showtime as usual did a great job. Lots of video and pics I've never seen before as well as stories I've never heard.

Gary Rossington had the most time, I never knew Gary was sitting between Ronnie and Steve Gaines when the plane went down, think about that for luck... Johnny VZ had a bunch of time, Big Ed King had a lot of time, the original bassist had some time, as well as Rick
    Medlocke.

The show started from the beginning and ended with the plane that ran out of fuel...

They only bought it. CMT was behind the film, specifically former CMT President, Brian Philips.

Eventually, yes. The actual people behind the film keep us informed via Facebook.

Saw this last night on Showtime. Great documentary - well paced, moving, highly informative and honest. Highly recommended. Will definitely buy this if released on BR.

Watched it last night too on the Showtime Anytime app on my Apple TV, great doc! On the app it is available in 1080p 24fps and 5.1 sound!

I watched it this afternoon and really enjoyed it. However, I found the 5.1 sound was a little distracting. The dialogue game from the front, center channel and the music was way, way louder in the surround speakers. Anyone else notice this? It made a lot of the dialogue hard to hear.
    But a great doc overall!

Agreed. Showtime does a good job with some of their rock and roll docs.
I loved all the old footage. Ronnie Van Zant was quite the character,
and just what the band needed for the kind of success they deserved.
The story about the trip to Kooper's Bentley to have 'that talk' about
how thing were going to 'go down' in the recording studio was funny.
The sound threw me a cupla left hooks a few times, but I found it rather
entertaining as it was late and I didn't care that much. lol

Speaking of documentaries, the Eric Clapton doc on AXS inspired
me to put this particular record on. What 12 Bars left out, EC the 70's
more than made up for it, as found it full of interesting information and
    stories from the decade.

I have to see this. I have a soft spot in my heart for Skynyrd. Where I grew up, for a few years in the 70s they were the warm-up act for almost every show I saw in NY and NJ. I must have seen the original band a dozen times before it really sunk in how great they were.

I don't listen to LS that much, but I have some catalog and admire and
respect what they did as much as any band. They were the southern
bad boys, the 'Stones of the South'. They worked their asses off and did
it their way. Love your avatar by the way, as I like Mink a lot and love
    that record. Cheers...

They haven't "done" anything but buy it, and air it. A CMT production. It ran in theaters for months, before being bought by Showtime.

Well then, Showtime does a good job buying documentaries...especially ones that ran in theaters for months. I hope they can sustain that business model.

Former CMT President Brian Philips, whose baby that film was from the start, is very happy that a network as big as Showtime deemed the film good enough to put their name on it. It just bugs me when people think that Showtime had a hand in creating it. Same reaction I used to have with " Netflix Original Programming," when ya know damn well, the show is older than Netflix !
But I get it, if you buy it, you can stamp your name on it.

Ironically, I’ve been listening to the core 6 albums this weekend. I don’t tend to dwell on “what if” w/artists...save for a few. And Skynyrd is one of those very few. My gosh, they were poised for greatness. Ok, they were already there, but you know what I mean. They had so much more to give. I can’t even imagine what could’ve been. I wish I had been born early enough to see them in concert, but glad I wasn’t able to hear that awful news in October 1977.

Did anyone else find it hard to understand what folks were saying over LOUD background music?
