Does 'Look Back in Anger' qualify? Richard Burton is a balled up fist in that movie and his little monologues are so intense and black. Just the kind of guy the girls really go for.

Never seen it, but the provocative title has always amused me. It’s available on Region 2 DVD, cheap, from Network. Might have to pick it up at some point.

It's a bit more gritty than Alfie. I like sixties UK period films, sometimes just to check out locations / pubs etc. The title is a bit misleading, more kitchen sink gritty. Again Susan George is in it always a bonus.

    Related..

Die Screaming Marianne ( 1971) is another interesting one. And of course Straw Dogs (made the same year).

Let's not forget the great Slade in Flame (I know – it's from 1975 but it's very working class)

Oh what great movie that is. Never expected anything as gritty as that when I first saw it, which was nearly 30 years after the fact. I should have known such a gutsy, authentic band like that would have made such a rewarding music movie.

Somebody had a kick-ass stereo in a movie I watched the other day (and enjoyed more than I thought I would): Orson Welle's "The Trial." It looked like Tony Perkins had a very nice system!

I'm getting all worked up just thinking about her in "The Servant." I love that Pinter movie. Wonderfully twisted. "someone has a dirty little secret..."

Yes. John Mills is magnificent in that role.
Can't remember what was upthread but any mention of the great character actor David Warner? Age Of Innocence comes to mind as well. Honor Blackman :)
Does The Killing Of Sister George qualify for this topic. Wow was that movie bleak. Can't remember who that amazing actress playing opposite Suzannah York was?

Will have to check this out. I see it's got one of the great latter day character actors in it Phillip Glenister. Unforgettable in Life On Mars.
