Not that I dislike(d) Huey Lewis & The News, but I went to see them in 1987 only because Robert Cray was opening.

Kinks opened for Hall and Oates on their School Boys in Disgrace (or was it Soap Opera) tour. Left when the Kinks set was over! Loved the Headmaster mask Ray wore on "The Hard Way"!

I knew a guy who went to see Colin James who was opening for ZZ Top.
After the 3rd song from ZZ Top he left the show. This was probably around 1990-91.

James Hunter opening for Susan Tedeschi.
Pharoah Sanders opening for Lonnie Liston Smith.
    Dictators opening for Ramones.
Brian Wilson opening for Paul Simon.

All the headliners were worthy, but I paid to see the opening act.

My dad took me to see Robert Plant in the 80s, because It Bites were supporting him and I loved them.

    this was a weird one...

U2 opening for J. Geils Band
    L.A. Sports Arena

U2 wasn't that well known, and this evening was a huge Record Company Party blow-out for
    J. Geils Band Freeze Frame album hitting Platinum. My buddy & I saw U2 standing around backstage & had a Heineken with them, totally casual!

I've seen Deep Purple 3 times. Each time they were not the headliner. Not the nights I saw them anyway. They rotated being headliner with another band on a couple of these tours I believe. Maybe all 3. Thing is...they were the best band on the bill all 3 times. They should've been top of the bill all 3 imo.

    1971 - played before Faces
2001 - played before Lynyrd Skynyrd
    2002 - played before Scorpions

Felice Brothers opening for Conor Oberst. But then the Felice Brothers came back out as the backing band for Conor, so that was cool.

Oh another one: Levon Helm Band opening for Phil Lesh.

I had really gotten into Drivin N Cryin, so was very excited to see them playing free in Olympic Centennial Park in downtown Atlanta. I didn't even realize that Collective Soul was playing afterwards! That was pretty cool. I went on to see DnC play many times in other cities throughout the SE USA. What a fun band. They bring it every night, and there is never any way to know what will appear on the set lists.

When I saw Lollapalooza 92 the first band Lush was my favorite. Many people evidently came for the second band, Pearl Jam.
