Wow. They are certainly comprehensive! Wonder what they’ll cost? Odd that on the Human’s Lib box, I can’t see the single mix of What Is Love...Unless they’ve restored it to the album like on the original LP..
prices are on the cherry red site about 90ukp. there are cheaper 2cd and 1cd versions, and also colored vinyl versions. later -1
Never thought I'd see Howard Jones superdeluxes. Too rich for my blood, I think, but I'll be watching the thread to see whether they're done well.
The 2CD and DVD versions are probably enough for me, but assuming these are well mastered I'm really excited for these releases. I haven't revisited these albums in a long time. I'd like to see the same job done on the first two Nick Kershaw albums, I don't think it's been done already has it? Not with DVDs at least.
I very much liked Howard Jones first couple of albums. In fact Human's Lib probably helped me turn the corner from disliking synthesizer music to enjoying it .... These sets look very comprehensive ... My minor beef would be, that for me to be interested in repurchasing them, a 5.1 remix would be the dangling carrot. I am rarely interested in a million remixes and demos, personally
How I hate this superdeluxe box set trend. I don't really need to rebuy this album. For that matter, I think I have most of these extended remixes and b-sides already on cd. Some of the other stuff in the large box sets is interesting, but I'm not sure I'm willing to part with about $120 per box to get those extras. I m curious as to whether anyone involved in this project will be smart enough to include the slightly longer versions of Things Can Only Get Better and Why Look For The Key in place of the original album versions on the Dream Into Action set. I know that might ruffle some feathers because those would represent a departure from the original album, but the slightly longer fade on Things Can Only Get Better has only been released on cd a couple of times and, to my knowledge, the slightly longer Why Look For The Key is thus far absent on cd. Or they could be added as separate bonus tracks even though they are identical to the album versions but for the longer fades. And, for such a comprehensive set, it's a bit surprising that it doesn't contain every previously released extended mix. At first glance, I'm not sure what all is missing but the one that jumps out at me is the Megamamamix of Look Mama.
These look pretty cool, but I'm personally not interested in boxed sets that contain CDs and then also a vinyl copy of the same album. I just don't care for vinyl. I have the Kings Of The Wild Frontier set from Adam And The Ants that includes the vinyl, which I'll never play. I have the reissues Howard released a few years ago which I'm fine with, and also a DVD he released with all of his music videos. The one thing I'd like from these sets is the Last World Dream DVD, but alas, DVDs from these types of sets are almost never sold separately.
Well, he has taken control of his masters for some time now, and even a lot of them out himself, augmented, with what I thought was his own remastering (bad move, IMO; you should have somebody in the chain brave enough to tell you no. let a pro do it, with your best interests in mind). Only thing that I could have asked for, were 5.1 mixes, which sadly were not forthcoming. I mean, the guy's a synthesist - it's not like the notion had not occurred to him that he has control of the sound, he should have control of the soundstage, and make it fantastic. Oddly, the only 5.1 experience we've gotten from Hojo, is curiously an album of solo piano. What can you gain from that....?
I also want to point out that, at least for Human's Lib, the 2010 remaster stays in perfect sync with the original CD and has almost identical EQ as well. I hate when that kind of thing happens, especially when the artists themselves are involved in the remastering. Hopefully this new reissue will use the actual master tapes.
why not, almost every 80's band has one, or anniversary dates for them. not really that surprising. i've seen superdeluxes of much lesser bands come out. personally, 5.1 mixes are just a waste of space, and gimmicks, since they don't represent the original music. i'm glad there's a lot of demos, remixes and edits. so, just sell it off, or trade/give it away. later -1
that's obviously personal taste, but there are very few of my four or five hundred surround albums that are gimmicky ... and the mono heads said stereo was a gimmick when it came out also ... i'm sure glad nobody listened to that.
because, most artists obviously record in surround sound, NOT. it's just an artificial way of selling more things to people that offer no advantage over the standard stereo. just like theres no real benefit to 4k over 1080p video. the vast majority of people will never listen to any music in surround (movies yes), will never calibrate their systems, and never actually enjoy a recording in that format, later -1
Sure...it's not like beefing up an album with lots of extra tracks as an artificial way of selling more things to people that offer no advantage over the standard album length, huh. And, the vast majority of people will never listen to any music in a deluxe version (YouTube, yes), will never calibrate their audio systems, and never actually enjoy a recording re-mastered by Steven Wilson, Elliot Scheiner, Kevin Gray, Ted Jensen, Bill Inglot,Bernie Grundman, Dennis Drake, Doug Sax or Steve Hoffman. Or Giles Martin. ...or, Ed Feinblatt. ...or Peter Mew...
If you think that no music can benefit from a surround mix, then either you haven't bothered listening or you simply don't care about the issue. That doesn't mean that such mixes don't bring added pleasure to others. Even with electronic music -- those early Depeche Mode albums sound great in 5.1. Surprisingly great to my ears. So even something synth based can wow in surround. As for your 4K versus 1080p video comment, I'm guessing you simply haven't watched any 4K video on a good monitor or you wouldn't have made that comment. Your post makes you sound like someone who simply doesn't care to pay attention to details. Maybe you notice differences but just don't care about them. I have friends like that. They can listen to my system and acknowledge it sounds a lot better than what they are used to, but then they continue listening to very low-fi systems in their own homes because they simply don't care about the qualitative difference. Music is a background thing for them. I'm not saying you are necessarily that disinterested in actually listening to music as a primary activity, but your dismissive posts are reminiscent of others who simply don't care.
Me neither. Even though I owned both those tapes back in the day and played them to death, Howard Jones is hardly someone I consider an essential artist of the era the deserves extensive deluxe editions of odd ball rarities. I would love to see them do some Nik Kershaw stuff. That would be wild.
Superdeluxeoverkill! If you are a megafan, it's an amazing collection ... it's got everything but the 8-track.
They did Mark, as well as the Yaz/Yazoo's I think Lib would of been neat. I'm just thankful for the amount of content included with these, good God
I would totally get the Nik Kershaw ones (and an LP player again) if they were to release it. ^^^ hint hint.. Cherry Red records...
oh, i didn't know they did yazoo .... it's certainly a nice set, i just never listen to demos and outtakes .... human's lib is probably my favourite of the earlier synth albums, and its just disappointing there's no 5.1
Hopefully. At the very least, they should put Radio Musicola back in print. I think vinyl is the only format where you can find the album for reasonable prices.
