Not all adventures end well—Hard Nose being a case in point :)

  3. Yeah we all have different tastes. I do love VF but I think that Snow in San Anselmo on Hard Nose is one of his masterpieces. I lived close to San Anselmo for most of my life and know it maybe had snow just once?

“Snow In San Anselmo” is indeed an epic track :agree:

Veedon Fleece is underrated. After Astral Weeks and Moondance, it might be my favorite of his.

Hard Nose The Highway got cut off at the knees... it was supposed to be a double-album.

I never rated it highly, but when I settled down and compiled a hypothetical four-sides with the outtakes from Philosopher's Stone, it became one of my favorites.

    Snow in San Anselmo 4:37
    Warm Love 3:22
Not Supposed to Break Down 5:23
    Laughing in the Wind 4:08
    Madame Joy 4:21

    Contemplation Rose 5:14
    Don't Worry About Tomorrow 5:19
    Wonderful Remark 7:59
    Lover's Prayer 3:57

    There There Child 3:00
    Hard Nose The Highway 5:14
    Wild Children 4:19
    The Great Deception 4:52
    Try for Sleep 6:03

    Bein' Green 4:21
    Autumn Song 10:36
    Purple Heather 5:44

Some of the outtakes are better than the majority of the album tracks.

I agree. Van needed a better editor (than himself?).

Just edged out by Astral Weeks for me although I will say that it seems to me that it delivers something different almost every time I play it. Feels like it's nudging at you gently all the time , never a passive listen for me. A very special record.

Thanks to this thread I’ve just ordered an Australian pressing off Discogs that was reasonably priced. Will give impressions once received.

My favorite Van record. 'Country Fair' absolutely destroys me. 'You Dont Pull Know Punches; is such a major composition, rolling and flowing, lyrical. I concur with others up thread that this LP is the 70's Astral Weeks equivalent. The live performances from this era with the stripped down band are amazing as well.

Fantastic song, I think Wild Children is great as well (live version off It's Too Late is better) plus Purple Heather is cool, Hard Nose is 2/3's great album ...it only looks weak compared with Veedon Fleece / Saint Domincs / Moondance etc...

Just a magnificent achievement. The first Van record to hit home. Would always be in my Top 5 Van albums and usually at the very top. Remarkable.

Cant Pull No Punches... man that is one of my favorite van songs for sure. Twilight was also one of his best B-sides that came out of recording this album (later seen on the 2008 deluxe release). Maybe one day Van will release deluxe editions of his collection or at least a vinyl pressing of his studio outtakes? all we can do his hope and pray.....

I found a 1st pressing a couple years ago (with shrink wrap on the jacket!) in mint condition
to finally replace a later copy I had that was really worn. The original cover is a beautiful
textured tip-on printing, easily one of the best looking jackets in my collection!

I have had a couple of LP copies of this over the years, both pressed off centre. `Country Fair' is really not a song you want to hear pitch fluctuations in :)

Would that be the 1st US pressing?

Yes, i've never come across the UK version here in Canada.
I paid either $40 or $45 (cdn) at Cosmos Records in Toronto,
they have a location in London, have a lot of interesting titles.
Looks like it was a great deal, the prices are through the roof
    on Discogs.

I recommend the first Japanese pressing if you can get hold of one at a reasonable price. My original UK pressing is good but the Japanese is better. More space around the instruments, makes the performances shine like diamonds. And CD-silent too!

    Is it CD-silent because it's a CD?
I was just looking at discogs and was disappointed to find there isn't a single Japanese pressing on vinyl mentioned. Do they exist?

    Cool! Thanks for the info.
Any idea when it was pressed?
    Could you post a pic?
