Hello everyone, the recent "Why Isn't The Who As Popular as Other Classic Rock Bands" thread sparked a genuine curiosity inside of me. While they aren't as big of sellers as the other 5, they're generally regarded by most circles (especially on this forum) to be in the "big six" classic rock bands, which are generally: The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, Queen and The Who. Now keep in mind, this doesn't necessarily mean these are your top 6 bands, this is just how you would rank them. I've also added a poll so we can see the general consensus.

    Me personally:

The Beatles: While it may be cliche, it's cliche for a reason.

The Who: Viewing the aforementioned thread, it's obvious a lot of people don't care for them, and I simply don't understand it. Sell Out-By Numbers is the second greatest album streak in my opinion only topped by Rubber Soul-The Beatles.

Queen: My personal favorite band, and while I love their first 8 albums, there's an obvious plunge in quality with the next few subsequent albums, which is why they are third. Love Innuendo though!

Led Zeppelin: The heaviest band here, who made some of the greatest albums/songs of all time. 4 is in my top 10 of all time for sure.

Pink Floyd: The most experiment band here. Responsible for numerous classic albums. Dark Side-The Wall is a brilliant experience.

The Rolling Stones: Love 'em, but don't love 'em as much as the others. I find their albums rather patchy, but they undeniably have earned their place in rock history.

P.S. I've added 2 votes so The Beatles don't blow away everyone.

    Stones and Zep.

Beatles aren’t classic rock, imo, but rather pop/rock. Queen, not a fan of, and Floyd is more progressive than stale old radio would have you believe. Not sure what I feel about The Who nowadays...

    Pink Floyd/ The Who

    In order:

    1. Pink Floyd
    2. The Who
    3. Led Zeppelin
    4. Rolling Stones
    5. The Beatles
    6. Queen

Rolling Stones could easily swap places with Led Zeppelin though. Actually Queen could probably swap with the Beatles too.

Queen and Zep. I dont consilder the Beatles and Stones "rock" bands. They are rock & roll bands. A differnce IMO.

The Beatles and the Rolling Stones are the evolutionary link between the Rock'n'Roll of the 50's (Chuck Berry, Little Richard, Buddy Holly, Jerry Lee Lewis, etc.) and what emerged as Rock in the late 60's early 70s. Really, they've got a foot in both camps.

Yes. I agree with the link analogy. But I dont hear "rock" in their music. I hear "rock & roll". (BTW, I am a huge Stones fan.. they have never been as hard as Zep or Queen or even The Who for that matter.)

I'm good with my copy of RS - 40 Licks. So I would not include them in any favorite list

Beatles and The Who. Stones are right up there but I don't think I've listened to an entire album by the other three in thirty years.

  18. The Beatles...
    ...and...
The Who got my vote, but....
The Who & The Rolling Stones were a dead heat, with Pink Floyd nipping at their heels...
    ... then Led Zeppelin...
... I like Queen, but that they are even in this poll shows how overrated they are... not even close to the others here...

Pink Floyd and Queen are both in my all-time top 10; they got my votes.

The Beatles and Zeppelin are both awesome as well and would both be in my 11-20 range.

I love some stuff by the Who, but their catalogue was too spotty for me to rate them that high, and I simply do not listen to them that much. They'd be a borderline top 50 artist for me.

I like the Rolling Stones, but aside from a handful or two of songs, they don't get much play in my CD player.

The Rolling Stones - Probably my favorite band ever
Led Zeppelin- Can't get enough of the riffs
    The Beatles- Nuff said
Pink Floyd- Not majorly into them but I have heard DSOTM and WYWH, both are excellent.
The Who- Only heard the Greatest Hits plus Who's Next so don't really know their back catalogue that well
Queen- Ditto but have only heard the 2 Greatest Hits albums.
