As in, where each single member is outrageously talented or gifted at what they do, and nobody lets the side down. I think I would say The Who, with Led Zeppelin in second.

The Hellecasters are very talented also . The Steve Morse Band also comes to mind.

I doubt that it's any well-known or “classic” rock band. You could make a claim for one of the Zappa bands (such as the ‘88 tour band) because they were picked solely on the basis of their talent. But generally the most famous bands fell together through biographical accident.

No one will believe this, but I very nearly posted "Can we get to page 2 w/o R*** being mentioned?"

But I knew it would slammed as threadcrapping, so I didn't do it.

    Sorry for threadcrap

Well that was so obvious I wasn't going to mention it but....since you brought it up...;) Seriously the first group that came to mind was ELP, but Rush is a good answer too along with CSNY.

I'm trying hard to think of a more individually talented band who had less in common with each other than these 3 gentlemen. By rights they should have imploded in the first rehearsal, but somehow they managed to get along long enough to make their mark.

Freddie Mercury is an outstanding singer and frontman. Arguably the best rock singer & frontman of all time.
Brian May is a top-notch guitarist, and one of the most unique and instantly recognisable.
Roger Taylor is an excellent drummer. He also has his own unique style.
John Deacon is one of the most underrated bass players, but truly skilled at what he did.

They all wrote hits are the only group with all four members to have written number one singles.
