    Steve,

Do you have a good anecdote about working with Brother Ray on Modern Sounds?

Sandy and Hank Greenberg I'd said were the 2 most "visible" Jewish ballplayers. My brother who attended Lafayette High School in Brooklyn came running home from school one day; slamming the door open yelling... that his new desk had Sandy K. carved into it. A red letter day in our house. Mazel Tov.

I’d like to take this opportunity to publicly thank you Mr. Hoffman for your work; your soul; your artistry. You’ve brought music and joy to untold millions all over the world.

    Hi, Steve.

I read somewhere that Going For The One by Yes was mixed in a room with shag carpet on the walls, tempting the mixer to emphasize the high end in 1977. To your knowledge, is this true?

    Thanks

That's funny. My speakers are the Tannoy D700 Dual concentric with the D200 Supertweeters on top to catch the top end. Paired with a Paravicini EAR V20 - 30 triodes.... Sounds wonderful for what I paid.

now looking at Sonus Faber Stradivari, with EAR 912 and EAR 509 monoblocks

Firstly, thanks for giving us this wonderful forum, it's an endless source of invaluable information, interesting opinions and entertaining banter.

As a busy family man do you still get the chance to see much live music? And if so, what has been your favourite gig in recent years?

Most people (including myself) think Pink Floyd - The Piper At The Gates Of Dawn Mono sounds better than the Stereo version. What do you think?
What do you think is the best sounding remaster on vinyl and CD.
I an assuming the original U.K 1967 Mono vinyl would be the best.
    I have:
    2007 remaster Mono/Stereo
Record Store Day April 2018 Mono (I hav'nt listened to it as I don't have a turntable yet)
    Thanks.

    Steve,

Why were there two DCC CD releases of Sammy Davis, Jr. Sings - Laurindo Almeida Plays (DZS-055 and DJZ-627), and were there any mastering differences between them?

Incidentally, I love rereading your anecdotes about Sammy--I always got the impression that his personality and life experience was just as much "Here's That Rainy Day" as it was "The Candy Man." I read Yes I Can on your recommendation and it was fantastic...did he ever attempt a second autobiography?

Many thanks for the music as well...wish I could take your Sammy, CSN, Buddy Holly, and Nat Cole discs with me...

Let's see, four track, Abbey Road, "2 db's" Norman Smith; I guess it depends on how you like the organ overdub on "Interstellar Overdrive".

    Steve,

I have a question regarding the drum sound on "Peggy Sue".
Do you know how they got that effect where it sounds like echo is being switched on and off on the tom rolls during the intro?

Hello Mr. Hoffman. This is one of the best threads to appear in a long time. Thank you for starting it.
My question: The fairly recent AP vinyl reissue of the Doors first lp clearly stated that they DID NOT use the master tape due to its being beyond repair. However, I believe I read somewhere that you have the tape or access to it, and that you can still utilize it. Is this true? Can the master still be used for future releases? What happened to it over time?
When I listen to the 45 rpm vinyl reissue, while it's good, it does not compare to an original pressing or the DCC pressing. I can hear it in Jim's voice.

Steve, what are your thoughts on the mastering of this box set.

    https://www.amazon.com/Ray-Charles-...words=ray+charles+country+and+western+box+set

I believe it was mastered by Dough Sax if I am not mistaken and seem to remember reading your positive comments on him as a mastering engineer.

    Hi Steve,
I have a question as to your preferences regarding 3 titles:

CTA or Chicago I - Mastersound Gold or MFSL SACD
Santana Self Titled - Mastersound or MFSL SACD
Santana Abraxas- Older MFSL Gold or Recent MFSL SACD

I believe in the past you endorsed the 2 Mastersounds and the original MFSL of Abraxas, but was curious if you have heard the more recent MFSL releases.
Thanks so much for your time.

    Two questions for @Steve Hoffman

    1. What are the last 5 albums you've listened to?
    2. When was the last time you were truly blown away by an album?

Thanks for starting this thread - very informative.:righton:

I don't see much live anymore. Even "acoustic" concerts have dreadful PA sound reinforcement that's way too loud!
