Exactly. I would have bought this one either way, but the inclusion of those tracks, or rather, the exclusion of those tracks from American Treasure, just isn’t at all subtle in its intent.
Hello again... in addition, here are the six non-charting commercially issued U.S. singles excluded from the collection: All Mixed Up 3:43 Yer So Bad 3:05 Peace in L.A. 4:43 A Higher Place 3:56 Swingin' 5:30 Good Enough 5:57
The two studio boxes are: The Complete Studio Albums Vol. 1: 1976-1991 The Complete Studio Albums Vol. 2: 1994-2014 Only issued on vinyl: (both of these are mine, purchased August and July of this year, respectively)
This is apparently a Geffen Records release. If you know anything about David Geffen and his attitudes towards commerce, the purpose of this box set will start to make sense.
Well. I take back all I said. Went to the site and saw the clear vinyl of only 1K being pressed. Looked at the track list on each side. And gave them my money. AND bought a grey American Treasure tshirt. I hate myself for loving you.
Anyone want to chronologize the track listing? About time we had a career spanner. No "Change of Heart" but it's still a good wealth of material here. Wish I could generate some more excitement on this one, but I'm sure I'll buy it...
This looked like a perfect one-stop comp for a fan like me (own just a few studio albums), but - like people have mentioned - it still misses a lot of hits that should have been included
These are completely different sets. One for the Petty fan who has everything, and one for the fringe fan who doesn't. The huge fans can get those two(?) new tracks if they want. & respectfully, that's what all retail business' do. Holiday cash-grabs.
If you want all the stuff he did, buy the complete studio boxes. This release is a good overview of some classic stuff at a fair price. As with any Great Hits or Best of, stuff will be left off, people will cry and sob and the world will continue to spin.

Despite the conversations about this set being a cash grab, etc., I’m excited for “For Real” to finally see the light of day. I’ll buy the set for that track alone.
I understand and respect your view on this but even as a career spanning best of this still misses the mark, IMO, as there are too many essential tracks missing.
I concur. I'm checking out of the hotel for the weekend and may/may not have more to say about both "An American Treasure" & " The Best of Everything - The Definitive Career Spanning Hits Collection 1976-2016" next week but one thing that is worth mentioning is Tom Petty/Heartbreakers are giving their fans quality with both of these releases. This particular alternate version of "The Best of Everything" for example has been one of the most requested tracks among the Tom Petty/Heartbreakers fanbase for years and I'm equally excited about "For Real" being included as well. One word of advice before I head out: Please be respectful of one another over the weekend regardless of passionate viewpoints and that respect extends to the curators of Tom Petty's archives inclusive of his family and bandmates. Passion is one thing, baseless accusations are very much another. Enjoy the weekend!
Geffen is long gone from the Geffen Records label. This kind of release is to be expected -- Petty is a legacy artist, and now that he is not controlling his catalogue, expect Universal to issue more compilations than it ever could have gotten away with when the company needed Petty's approval. The last anthology represented material through 2000, so creating a new, updated two-disc collection to include post-2000 music is not unreasonable. That said, one wonders who the market is for this compilation. The devoted Petty fans will have all of this material, and casual fans will likely stream or download individual tracks of their liking.
Needs some Mudcrutch. Well my Daddy took me camping out under the stars Left my by the fire while he hit the bars and I broke my finger on a trailer hitch Momma called Daddy a son of a bitch
