Brad, you might know the answer to this. Does anybody know if a Quad mix was ever done for the Behind Closed Doors album from Charlie Rich? I'm asking because I just got done listening to the Dutton-Vocalion SACDs for Billy Paul that they did. Since it's stuff that's a license from Sony, it's got my hopes up that Behind Closed Doors might get the same treatment if it had ever been issued as a Quad LP after the original album came out in late '72.

In fact, you can hear steel guitar on the quad that is actually buried in the standard stereo mix.

Each of us should flood the inbox of Dutton Vocalion and request an SACD release of "Behind Closed Doors," something similar in concept to the enjoyable Lynn Anderson collection. I like how they coupled Lynn's "Rose Garden" LP with her "Greatest Hits" LP to deliver a generous 22 tracks in total.

Billy Sherrill at Epic did have a Quad mix prepared of "Behind Closed Doors". It was released as a Epic SQ Quad LP and on Quad 8 Track Cartridge Tape in the US.

Well, these are all good ideas, but I was thinking the best company to petition for a new remaster of Charlie Rich's iconic Behind Closed Doors album is Real Gone Music, perhaps paired with one of his other great Epic albums of the 1970's. Given that this album is controlled by Sony Music, we might get someone like Vic Anesini to handle the remastering or one of his great colleagues at Sony Battery Studios. I have actually suggested this to RGM in the recent past and perhaps some more feedback to them could help get it done.

I have several Charlie Rich quads, on 8-track. Very discrete mixes typical of Columbia/Epic at that time. Best Of is really good as well.

There is a Sony/Legacy remaster of the stereo album.

What they are asking for is the quad version and that is Dutton Vocalion's domain

Yes indeed and I have that version which is a decent remaster, but some Rich fans have said they even prefer the original cheap budget version over this one as it seems a little warmer. I have finally tracked down that original version on eBay and I am going to get it in a couple of days and I will compare the two versions. This album was originally so well recorded by engineer Lou Bradley that I am wondering if we can get an even better sound than what we already have on it. I mean, Sony Battery has really gotten great at doing these remasters, especially when you consider what Vic has done on the Elvis catalogue in the last dozen or so years. I think a double album of BCD's with Rich's other CMA Album Of The Year, Very Special Love Songs, would be a meritorious idea with brand new remastering. What do you think, Brad, as you are probably the definitive expert about country music on this great forum? I value your opinion highly!

  12. Definitely, YES! This song was available on an SQ-encoded quad LP. The SQ format was kinda fake quad, but a true quad version was simultaneously available on Q-8, 8-track tapes.

Thanks Brad, I appreciate your thoughts. I will re-approach Mr. Anderson on the idea later in the year as I did talk about the possibility of this as a two-fer in the past with him. We are now busy promoting RGM's Christmas releases, one of which I had the honor of writing the liner notes for, the CD twofer of John Klein's Living Stereo version of A Christmas Sound Spectacular, combined with his fine follow-up holiday album from 1964, Lets Ring the Bells All Around The Christmas Tree.

I wrote to Dutton Vocalion with quad SACD requests for these albums.

For Stereo, they'd be a great choice. But people here want the Quad 4.0 channel mix, the DSD Stereo mix, and a RedBook CD layer which means Hybrid SACD. The people at Dutton/Vocalion in England have been releasing classic Quad RCA, Columbia, and Epic Quad titles on Hybrid SACD. This is a title this company likely could license.

    Brad,

I need to hunt down a SQ Quad LP of this. My Sansui QRX 7500A can decode SQ.

What a great idea! I will definitely send an email to RGM this week as well.

But Real Gone does not do quad mixed albums which is what this thread is about, or was about. I sure hope the email does not go through, gets lost into a spam folder, and the market for a quad SACD remains a possibility.

NO, Dutton / Vocalion is the better label to handle this. We want high resolution and quad layer, that means 4-channel discreet.

They are common and very low cost.

It's true. Even the quad mixed down to stereo keeps the steel guitar intact.

I will hold back with my follow-up with Gordon for a while until we give Dutton/Vocalion a chance to get this done. I think Gordon was concerned about this prospect anyways since Behind Closed Doors is still readily available on CD. I thought the addition of another one of Rich's great Epic albums might make it a better selling prospect as a twofer, but lets give this SACD release a chance to percolate.

Yes and D/V often does SACDs in quad and as two-fers as well.
