As mentioned above, 1976 for radio, 1982 for my first actual "make a difference" record company job.

Usually the artist comes to me. I've requested to do a bunch of stuff at DCC and my wishes were usually granted.

Well, you're describing analog compression plus EQ added during cutting. That's the runaway train. Heck if I had known this I would have added the same thing to all my masterings and they would be priceless now.

As told to Bender by the God nebula: in the Godfellas episode:

"When you do things right, people won't be sure you've done anything at all"

    The mastering engineer's mantra...

Which studios that you have utilized/visited would you say had the best
built-in sound and sound shaping facilities? Old and/or new.

Same with umpires in baseball. When you don't notice them, it means they've done a good job.

    Hi Steve,

Can you share with us a couple of key failures or significant challenges during your professional journey, and what you may have learned from those experiences or how they impacted you?

(For me, two layoffs earlier in my career each opened up for me new opportunities that eventually brought me to the very fulfilling work that I've been privileged to do in the last 5-6 years.)

    Craig.

I really wish you'd work on 70s Black Sabbath. I'd love to hear the end result. Which album of theirs would you like to do, and, what would you do?

Would it be fair to assume that most of your working time is spent on privately commissioned projects, not the higher profile releases that come out fairly infrequently? What are some of the projects you've worked on the last few months? No specifics are required, just some general info would be interesting to know.

Since we are on the topic of the RL Zeppelin II (which I have one), how does it sound compared to the original Who's Next tape? I have one of the original Doug Sax vinyl masterings, and to my ears, the drum sounds are dull and thuddy with no extension really on the bass drum or cymbals (and that's with a supposedly good mastering from Doug.) That's not the case with the RL Zep II. I can't imagine what the Who's Next tapes really sound like...
