Well, I've been inside Capitol, Record Plant, RCA, RPM International, Warner Bros., Conway, Gold Star, Westlake, Ocean Way (United-Western), Sunset Sound, Sound Factory and a bunch more, I guess. All great studios. I'm not a fan of acoustically dead rooms though for the most part.

I'm just tired of the old war horses that have all the instruments and all the vocals at the exact same volume. (Like Led Zep IV). They are starting to bore me to death.

This thread is reminding of those Think-In pieces the British music papers used to do.

With the exception of the Hal Blaine autograph, we're very much on the same page.

So have you ever mastered Irish Sea Shanty with Tuvan Throat Singers?

I posted this just now on another thread and I got to thinking...

Steve, what's your go-to when you wanna listen to Otis Redding? The production is so flat and dead on everything I've ever heard. Should I stop my search for some holy grail pressing? That's just how it was recorded, right?

Steve, do you think we will ever see Gary Lewis & The Playboys original stereo mixes on CD? : )

I have the old records, the CD's from the 1980s, 90s, they all sound the same, like Stax/Volt stuff always sounds.

Completely understandable. And IMHO Zeppelin IV is the title by that band most needing a revisiting via the mixing console. Despite all of its flaws, Led Zeppelin II does have a bit more going on as far as dynamics and bottom end heft go. It is an exciting listen. With IV, the mix gets in the way of the music--or more accurately, the power of that music.

Anyway, I'm sure the entire forum will be thrilled to hear what you can bring to the table vis a vis revitalizing any great albums that received less than complimentary original mixes. And your mastering experience puts you in a unique position to do said remixes in a fashion that is respectful to what the artist was trying to achieve with the technology available at the time. (Time to break out the tubes.)

Do you have plans for how this forum will evolve? As a global enterprise with many thousands of well-heeled music fans, have you had discussions with commercial enterprises for projects involving the forum? Just curious...

Awesome. I'd love to hear what you do with the cold sound of Vol. 4. Of the first 4, I think Master Of Reality sounds the best. Rodger Bain was sort of flying by the seat of his pants on the 1st two.

Steve: Big fan of your work, especially what you did with the two Yes SACD releases for AF, Close to the Edge and Going for the One. I had never heard these albums sound so good. Any interesting stories about the mastering of these albums? Were the original master tapes in decent shape?

I would recommend the original UK 67' Mono despite the fact i swapped it 15 years ago.

Thanks for this great thread Steve! I love your DCC of Night Moves. Could you give some insight on why there were no further Bob Seger releases on DCC or AF? Poor sales for Night Moves, issues with label/management, something else?
