Yeah Ive been reading that but numbers never tell the whole story for me personally. I hear that some of Imagine has lower DR numbers but I like it. Graphs and numbers are for scientists and mathematicians and bankers.
I thought the non-critical ones were running the risk. Or were you being ironic? Actually I think it is was 6 of one and half dozen of the other with Sgt Pepper but the nasty ones who want to get noticed and the ones who don’t let the music get in the way of those numbers tend to overpower everything.
“Martin even revealed during the Q&A that he discarded his first pass at the remix, finding it “too compressed.” He instead sought a sound that’s “open but aggressive,” and honored the work of the band members who used the studio as “their playground” Full article here: Through A Glass Onion: The Second Disc Hears Selections From The Beatles’ “White Album” Box - The Second Disc
The Esher demo of “Mary Jane” runs 2:38, which is definitely sufficient to get the point across. I think the difference of earlier takes is probably right. For “Martha,” I suspect we’re getting it only moderately stripped down, since a lot of Paul’s overdubs get lost beneath the orchestral instruments in the final mix. I would be very surprised if we got the basic piano track to which everything else was added (assuming this was indeed a one-Beatle recording).
Paul Hicks - his previous remix works include Let It Be Naked & Love. He has also been part of many remastering efforts such as The Beatles stereo box, George Harrison remasters, etc.
Btw, as with any remix, there are people who dislike the new Imagine remix preferring either the cleaner 2000 remix or the denser 1971 mix. It’s all very subjective.... Personally, I like the new Imagine remix. It adds nice clarity and some bottom end while staying faithful to the original. More options to listen, the better
Yes, he was the remix engineer on Love. He also worked with Giles on the Living In The Material World soundtrack
George on guitar, Ringo on drums is the best guess - here's a picture of the session (personnel matches "Martha My Dear", not "Honey Pie" as it has been misattributed to in the past - string players presumably on a fag break):
