Do you consider the Police prog rock?

Was discussing music with my brother and he referred to The Police as "one of the best prog bands ever" or something to that effect. It kinda took me by surprise as I've never thought of them as a prog band and don't think I've ever heard of them referred to as one. Thoughts?

No. Yes they did have tendencies that could be considered progressive and even Stewart was in a prog band prior to forming The Police, But I would not call them progressive rock.

No. The early stuff is very punk influenced.

Ask your brother if he considers Jethro Tull to be a Heavy Metal band...

Definitely agree. I hear definite punk and reggae influences in their music but to me they've always been a pop band - a very good, creative and musical one at that...

You're right about the reggae thing. Even Rush copied some of it. Big Police fans.

They are not a prog band.

But then, “The Other Way Of Stopping,” and Andy’s weird mother song beat prog Phil’s weird mother song to the punch.

    Kinda sorta proggy.

They were popular among people I knew growing up in the 90s-early 2000s, if you called them a reggae band that would not have been controversial then.

But prog, I never heard anyone say that.

You should ask your friend what are some other prog bands, a lot of times people aren't quite as up on what constitutes a genre as the music nerds on this forum are.

  17. Not prog rock any more than The Beatles were (obligatory mention) or the Stones. What they did do was experiment with their style borrowing elements from other genres to make their music change and progress.

They certainly have the musical chops to blow many prog bands off the stage. I mean, check out Stewart Copeland on David Letterman's "drum week":
