    No, but......

Summers and Fripp did that “I Advance Masked” album and then The Police did “Syncronicity”, which has some prog pop moments, if you consider that in the late 70’s/early 80’s some prog bands were leaning quite pop (Asia & UK & Yes for example).

So not exactly prog, but “prog-ish” at times. To my ears.

The one person who said yes so far was just testing the button. Prog? I mean, not even close. Not even close!

Don’t talk music with that friend ever again, if you know what’s good for you!

Definitely not and, being a prog guy, I’m perfectly fine by this. :D They’re one of my favorite bands!

Oh sure, I grant you that - and also granted my brother that in our discussion. However, my counter argument would be - well yeah, so does Prince...but would anyone consider Prince prog rock? Musical chops are kinda a necessity to play prog rock but that doesn't mean anyone who has musical chops is prog.

  6. No capes. Not prog.

I love prog, I love The Police. But The Police are not even remotely in the slightest bit close to being mentioned in the same sentence as prog with a straight face.

Being able to play doesn't make you prog.

To the two people who voted ‘yes’ to The Police being a prog band, what, in your opinion, makes them prog?

I think a lot of it turns on how much you like or dislike Les Claypool. I thought the album was alright.

I generally don't like sub-genres. People make up names, sometimes they stick sometimes they don't . Sometimes people use adjectives not knowing there is a sub-genre that may be polar opposite of the intended use of the word.

Classifying music reaches an absurdity at time. Think about Alternative music. What is it? It's not rock, its the alternative. Well, isn't that punk?Well no, punk is rock. Then a radio station will push out an Alternative Rock format. So Alternative became mainstream. You can't make up this stuff.

We use words to describe things. Somebody will use a word like progressive to describe the music. But the listener immediately capitalizes the "P" and an argument or at the very least confusion ensues. This the world we live in.

People are are always trying to classify stuff. I tend to resist. I love that Bela Fleck decided he wanted to put together a band to play some jazz. I guess the Flecktones were Jazz. I sure wasn't bluegrass. Anyway people thought it was crazy that a banjo player wanted to play jazz. My response to that was that, "What about Dixieland? Isn't that where Jazz got its roots?" Our society, too often, over thinks things.

  16. To quote Miles Davis, there are only two kinds of music: good music and bad music. The Police are the former.

Nah. Pretty much pop song structures. No interludes. Not many key changes. Not prog.
Heck did they ever do a song in something other than 4/4? :D

Duke Ellington had a similar quote: ”There are simply two kinds of music, good music and the other kind.”

I like them as well. Thank heavens they did not do prog. They probably would have been really out there if they did. We needed a band with strong tight pop structures at that point and they delivered.

Fake punks. They had the punk sound but they were not real punks. Not like all of the other bands that were "real" punks.
