No, but Ian Anderson does (apparently).

Stewart Copeland played drums in a prog band (Curved Air), Andy Summers played in a few outfits that were on the fringes of prog and Sting's background was famously in jazz-fusion but I don't think the music they made as the Police could be categorised as 'prog'.

Hibernating Tortoise is an excellent name for a Prog band.

I think your brother, and four other people need to brush up on their definition of Prog.

Nope - (ironically) see bottom of page 5 in the booklet of the Yes Tormato expanded remaster, and it very clearly attributes the quote to Ian Anderson of Jethro Tull.

I'll trust that far more than some random dude interviewing Andy Summers misremembering/getting his facts wrong.

I dearly wish the OP had made the poll results public so we could see who those 4 "yes" votes are! :D

Can't believe that this discussion has lasted this long. Is this even a debatable question?

    No.

Sting, Andy, and Stew had the chops, but obviously weren't interested in being a prog band at all.

Not prog in my view. They do have some "art rock" tendencies, but on the progginess scale, that's weaker than prog. I wouldn't even really say that they're art rock, so on the progginess scale "art rock tendencies" is weaker than "art rock," too.

    ^^ This.

Synchronicity and, to a lesser extent, Ghost in the Machine have some mildly progesque elements about them, and the band members have something of a prog pedigree (Andy Summers was in Soft Machine, Stewart Copeland has played with Les Claypool and Adrian Belew), but as a band, the Police are not prog. End of story.

I thought Oysterhead was great. The album was a good listen and the one show I saw was great.

If the Police are prog then every band could be prog therefore nothing is prog.

Certainly not. They went a little "art rock" on their last two albums but not prog by any reasonable definition.

Remember that time at the '83 Grammies when Synchronicity lost to Thriller for best prog rock album? Never again did they try prog rock again, but it pushed MJ to create his prog rock master piece, Bad.

For real. Progressive was out the window during this time. "New Wave" was kind of all-encompassing, but that was as close as it got.
