As I pondered this weighty subject, it occurred to me that I have never once been tired of any song on this record.

"Christmas Wrapping" is great ! I remember how well it was used on an episode of the wonderful 80s sitcom "Square Pegs"

 

I appreciate you listing Mario Lanza; I'm a big fan of his Christmas music. However, I think his 1956 Lanza Sings Christmas Carols is superior to the 1959 re-recordings. Mario was...not well..by 1959 and those particular sessions.

 

A shimmering magical Christmas album with fantastic arrangements! It's been my favourite for many years.

 

For most of the last 30 years and for a couple more years (as long as my parents are alive and well enough) I am usually driving to where they live for Thanksgiving. Because the journey back-and-forth is doable as a day trip, but it's still over 100 miles each way, I am usually driving at noon local time. You have one guess at what a lot of radio stations play at noon on Thanksgiving.

I can deal with that. What I can't deal with is, immediately after that is over, one particular station starts playing Christmas music for the afternoon. So I don't listen to that station when I am driving, although it is hard, as it is one of a few not playing classic rock, and I tend to listen to that station at other times when I am driving into that area. (the station is WXPN Philadelphia 88.5)

Oddly enough, this song's melody sounds like Emerson, Lake, and Palmer's "I Believe in Father Christmas". I wonder if that's intentional on Weird Al's part...

 

WRT to Beatles Christmas album, I had gotten a copy of it around 1982 or so.

My brother was in charge of playing Christmas music on the record player not long after (1983-1984) when we were unwrapping gifts. I was in the other room when I heard the beginning of the 1963 message (with the "different" version of Good King Wencelas"). He then took it off when he realized it wasn't music. I think I was the only one in the other room who realized what he had done. He put something else on instead. I never asked him about it.

Used to listen to the vinyl at my grandparents house every year.

Don't have the vinyl anymore, but we still listen to the album every year when we put out decorations.

 

Dad bought the 1959 LP at Christmas '59 & I've just bought the Stereo CD version, I love that. I also have a CD of his earlier versions (56 & before) but I prefer the '59 one. I still have it, the LP that dad bought & I dig it out every year for a few plays.

Have you ever worked in a retail store that plays Christmas music during the season? Feel sympathy for the people who have to listen to Christmas music eight hours a day from Black Friday through New Year's! I worked retail for years and the experience damn near put me off Christmas music forever. I can still only take it in small doses.
