Yup, and that's what made the U2 GA situations different than the traditional "one big stage" situation I dealt with for Bowie 1990...

The 2015 and 2018 tours used the same staging, and technically, you could stand wherever you wanted - outside of the "Red Zone" you mention.

It was still best to be close to the main stage, but they used so much of the ramp/B stage that it wasn't a clear "place to be".

For all my U2 2015/18 shows, I'd just show up when I felt like it, and I always had awesome sightlines.

Yup - I forgot her! Probably a bunch of other examples, too.

I think Foo Fighters shows are GA for the entire floor with a traditional setup. Not sure of any other big acts who do that.

Also not sure why these situations seem less dire/violent than they did in the past. Better security? Less boozing/drugging pre-show? Dunno, but I don't get the sense GA shows are chaotic like they used to be.

Maybe it's age - which is much of the reason I don't fear fights on the field for the Stones. Even though the Foo Fighters get a reasonably young crowd, much of the audience is still 40s/50s, and it's just a given that there'll be fewer fights with a bunch of fogies! :D

For those who haven't kept up, deep cuts and a theater show from 1-2-3 years ago.

The Stones had the front pen for the `95 VL tour of Europe. Those who queued early were rewarded with a place in it, which meant plenty of space, and a relaxed atmosphere. You were given a wristband which allowed you to leave (for food/drinks/loos) and return easily. Once the show had started, and everyone was standing up, security would let some extra people in to the available space.

They continued to use the free pen on future stadium tours, until they realized that they could monetize it and charge a premium for a spot there!

Having been to many jazz fests, it will be a monumental task as the set up has multiple stages in different areas. To set this up for one big stage and then reset for the standard set up for the following day would be a logistical nightmare I would think.

As a visit to certain NFL stadiums --where tickets to the games are NOT cheap--would attest.

Seriously, it's been 25 years - can't they acknowledge Jones is indeed, in the band? Reward the man properly.

Just throwing something out there..a bit off-topic but not really as it's a point that often gets overlooked, IMO.

In a day and age where younger rock bands (KISS, Motley Crue, Def Leppard, Bon Jovi...etc...) are using backing tracks (vocals and music) while performing "LIVE" on stage, I give major props to the Stones for laying it all out there, warts and all. They may not "bring it" like they once did but at least they're still bringing it.

Ummm, you may not want to go there. The Stones have used off-stage musicians and vocals for a while! Not as bad as backing tracks, but not 100% kosher either.

My hunch is, being a sideman, he would rather have the flexibility to take other gigs than be locked away "in the Stones". They know they rely on him and reward him well for it

Not that I'm terribly concerned about it, but can you point me towards evidence of this? I'm curious.

I've got no problem with that, pianists, horn players, backing vocals, I understand that from two points...They are older now and need support but it can also clutter up the stage. At least it is live music.

They tend to start the show with just the four Stones, Darryl and Chuck, however, backing vocals by Lisa and Bernard were clearly audible for the first few songs in a few tours, and I seem to recall Blondie's guitar being audible before he would appear on stage too.

It's no secret Blondie plays guitar with them, and Lisa and Bernard have been doing backing vocals since, what, Steel Wheels? I can understand them being off-stage for the first few songs to open a show, or even keep them in darkness to keep the focus entirely on the band, but this is in no way deceiving the audience.

    Sure it is!

the list of younger bands you named is funny as i imagine the average age of the members of those bands is mid 50's

Next year will be the 50th anniversary of Let it Bleed. Wonder if they will be doing anything on the tour for that.
