    Where to?

  2. Early on- Monterey, 1967- he wasn't. I think he may have begun to appreciate them more in later years. Pete apparently got on with the son of Dead drummer Bill Kreutzmann, Justin, quite well when Justin was just a kid out on the road with his dad. By Justin's own account.

John Entwhistle was asked about the Dead after the 1981 Essen Germany gig- apparently some people were puzzled by the matchup. The Ox laughed and said "We're exactly the same, they just have longer hair." I guess, maybe from a bass player's point of view...

GD road manager Rock Scully's memoir includes an anecdote where Garcia is staying in a room at the St. Regis hotel in New York, imbibing various substances with Scully. And they both hear some weird noise on the other side of the wall, persisting and getting louder...and then the bricks move, and a hand come through, and then the wall gives way and Keith Moon pulls himself through into their room! And then, aggh, Moon madness...

Scully also claimed that the Who and the Dead jointly owned the prestigious St. Regis for a while- or anyway had a share in owning it- through their management!

I've never found confirmation of either of Scully's stories, and they are the sort of stories that I'd want confirmed. But I can confirm that Scully and David Dalton wrote that, in their book.

They were still snappy dressers in 1965. The rot had set in by 1969 though (see pics above)

Is this the tour that Roger spoke of when amphetamines were popular with Pete, John and especially Keith.

I bumped into Pete - literally - in LA some years back by chance.

I laughed when I saw who it was, and we ended up talking - found him to be an absolutely wonderful guy.

I love these photos of great / hugely popular groups in the 70s set up with their amps and drums on the floor and just a few monitors. The music was so good they didn't need any special effects, pyro, gimmicks etc. I've seen wedding bands in recent years with more complex set-ups (but maybe not the wattage). I was 8th row center for this show. A great night - thanks for sharing.
