I don't know, but I feel like "Love Me Do" and "Blowing in the Wind" (recorded within 7 weeks of each other) started something, and "American Pie" ended and eulogized it.

Can't help but think of Zappa's view on things AD 1966:

    Wednesday I watched the riot
I've seen the cops out on the street
Watch them throwing rocks and stuff and choking in the heat
    Listen to reports
    About the whiskey passin' round
    Seen the smoke and fire
    And the market burnin' down
Watched while everybody on his street would take a turn
They stomp and smash and bash and crash and slash and bust 'n burn

For me, Revolution 9 on The White Album captures well, the chaos of the late 60's, political upheavals, riots, strikes, assassinations and the war in South East Asia that was going badly for both sides. When I listen to that nightmarish soundscape a montage of those scenes come to mind. And I can well imagine Charles Manson with his ear to the stereo looking for instructions... take this brother, may it serve you well...

The general sound of rock music became increasingly strident and tense as the decade wore on, very much mirroring the times.
