Is it really that hard to turn off motion smoothing?

 

Of all the trivial things in the world to go on a crusade against....

 

Actually ....

I had no idea that motion smoothing was a thing, or an option, and I often notice the "soap opera effect". Plus, I do not watch sports so I will suffer my menu to turn it off and see if I notice a difference. Thanks, Tom Cruise!

Surgery....the reason why he don't want "smoothing"...he wants his competition to look worse for it.

 

This type of TV adjusting/calibration really needs it's own dedicated thread.
There are hundreds of post scattered in so many different film topics.
I for one would like to know the best settings ………… and not just the picture quality, my LG has 5 audio options to choose from also.

when I said I had seen "The Prestige" on an HD set, and I thought it looked like crap?

 

If someone doesn't notice it, I guarantee they'll have to spend an hour trying to figure out how to turn it off.

Those that know, of course, smacked that $hit off the minute they got their TV turned on.

 

Does plasmas have them, or is it just a 4K thing.

 

What benefit do the manufacturers get by turning motion smoothing on by default?

Even if the average person doesn't know to turn it off, I don't know anybody that actually prefers it. It makes me quesy after about 5 seconds.

Me, I'm morally obligated to be pro motion smoothing since I see Rian Johnson is against it. It ain't much, but I gotta stand for something!

She had a great idea...not sure though if it's technically possible:

I installed his TV's back when I worked for him from 1991 to 2006 and it obviously was not an issue yet.

Btw, the first plasma I got for him was a Pioneer 50" and he paid $14.3k for it in 2001.

My Panasonic Viera was purchased in 2012 and it has it, so at least that long. I'd guess even earlier though.

I guess Tom must have read my "High Definition Makes Lousy Actors Look Worse" thread.

 

I would say most people have no clue, their displays are on factory settings and they leave it as is thinking that's the way it's supposed to look. Motion smoothing is unbearable to watch, makes me ill almost like sea sickness.

 

I think that's the one!

Some people (e.g. my parents) don't even notice when a 4:3 image is stretched to fill out a 16:9 screen!

 

There's nothing wrong with HD if the tech is used correctly.
