Watched this last night. What a beautiful and touching film. Just lovely.

My favorites books as a kid and I loved the first movie. My introduction to Mickey Rooney. I remember the second film being a disappointment (even though I liked the book better than the first one.)

One of the greatest movies I've ever seen. Photography by Caleb Deschanel. He had some cute kids as well... caleb.jpg

Pauline Kael called it perhaps the greatest children’s movie ever made. I can’t think of a better one, and certainly none more ravishing.

Didn’t realize they were his kids! Great DNA.

In 1980 my girlfriend dragged me kicking and screaming to the movie. I was really pissed. That lasted about 2 minutes into it. Then I was spellbound. We sat in our seats when it was over, looked at each other and she said "Are you thinking what I'm thinking?"

Yes, we stayed and watched it again.

How is the Blu-Ray? Anyone know?

Really nice, I own the Blu-Ray and have re-watched Criterion release several times, even a few new fans of the film that forgot about this gem, but apparently had seen it in cinema as kids on first release and forgot about since.

There was a book first, right? I loved it. I’ve never bothered with the movie. My loss, I guess.

Saw this in the theater. I'd say the scenes on the beach when he's shipwrecked are some of my favorite in all of motion pictures.

Can't tell you how disappointing the sequel was.

Loved the theme music by Carmine Coppola

There was a whole series of books that were very popular. They made films of the first two.

I read all (I believe) the books as a kid. The movie was nice (I probably saw it on TV).
I remember the movie departing from the book - as expected for a movie. But at this point I barely remember the books.

I did not know there was a sequel. Doesn't matter - no interest.

Original logo pursuits: The 1976 United Artists/Transamerica logo appears on the 1981 Magnetic Video version and on the early 1990's MGM/UA version.
