A CD in my collection had a millisecond drop-out in one spot. The label side Silver had been breached by a scratch and you could see daylight through it. I tried several methods, the toothpaste, the wax filler etc., to repair it because it wasn't inexpensive to replace. After some trial and error and long hard thinking I thought "I'll try some Black felt pen on the label side just to see if I can correct the millisecond skip. I can always remove it if it doesn't work." Well son-of-a gun it actually worked! Not cosmetically ideal and won't win any beauty pageants, but still worth it to me just to hear it properly. So if you have one with this condition don't hesitate to give this a try before tossing it in the trash.

A few years ago I read about a guy who taped a small piece of aluminum foil to the label side to the same effect.

  6. Great news, but how on earth can someone "scratch"cds? I have well over 1000 cds and not one of them have an issue. I wish i could say the same for any of my second hand LPs :shake:

I often wonder the about the same thing. Also I can't understand people complaining about "fragile" jewel boxes. I have a couple of thousand and I've never damaged one - not even a digipak.
But then again, I'm an amazing person. :D

And I never broke a Ming vase in my life, but I can imagine how it can happen. But then again, I have a lot of imagination.

I may have exaggerated a bit. I did drop a jewel case on October 2nd, 1993 around 9.17 pm.
    But that's it. :p

Might be a stupid question but, when you say "black felt pen", do you mean a Sharpie?
And do you just fill in the scratch, or the scratch and the area around it?

A fix that might get more bits back is to rub gold leaf into the crack with a soft applicator. The impression of the bits might still be there if the scratch only had exposed the aluminum, allowing it to flake away, and not penetrated to the data layer. Something like silver paint is less likely to work, as it is basically glitter in paint.

The different bit depths simply reflect the laser to a different spot, so anything that restores reflectivity could work. The black marker probably works in the same way that a black car can look quite mirror-like.

As long as light can't pass through the disc anything can be used on the top side of a CD to block it.

I don't have any major damage on CD's that I'm the original owner of, but there are many that have some light scratches that were a result of being played in various car stereos over the years. The iPod era has eliminated that for me now, but we're talking a good 20 years of car stereo playing for a good chunk of my collection. If you've never played your CD's in a car stereo, then there's a good chance your discs are totally mint. Over the years mine were played in factory systems, aftermarket single disc players and aftermarket trunk mounted cartridge cd changers. That's a lot of exposure to mechanical handling of the disc.

Should the situation ever present itself again I may give this a try or if anyone else does they can hopefully let us know here in this thread if it does work.

  21. You confirm what i have been telling my wife for years. Keep quality cds away from car stereos. The only ones we use in the car are cds that i have changed because i didnt like the mastering etc. I also buy cds just for the car that are cheap and second hand.
