Made In Japan Deep Purple

So I just listened to Made In Japan again having heard it first ~45 years ago. There's a lot of great live albums, Humble Pie, The Who, Allman Brothers, Johnny Winter And Live, etc. Why do I still love this recording having heard it over and over and over?

 

It's a good band, in their prime, hitting all the nails on the head.
What's not to like

 

It's a great live album......in the same vein as Filmore East by the Allman Brothers Band and Live At Leeds by The Who. Great live albums that can be played over and over.

 

It's a classic.

Like the Allman's Live at the Fillmore, Live at Leeds by The Who. Great songs, excellent musicians playing at their peak and hungry.

Jon Lord playing his B3 through a Marshall, brilliant.

 

Because the guitar din from :49 to :55 on the opener is about as wicked sounding as a guitar can get. That is one of the reasons I listen to it over and over.

 

Bought it used in 1977. It is a likely candidate for most album plays in my listening experience.

 

Why I spent big bucks on both the DCC vinyl, and the gold CD.

 

It's a combination of great performances by a band at their peak and a seriously excellent recording - the only one that comes close (recording quality wise) in the OP's list is Humble Pie: Performance - Rockin' The Fillmore.

 

Love the long jams, especially the 20-minute "Space Truckin' ", and I personally like their other double live album Deep Purple In Concert even more with its 18-minute "Wring That Neck" and 22-minute "Space Truckin' " with another song squeezed onto the same side with it. Both albums will melt your face off.

 

There were two excellent record shops on the campus of the University of Oklahoma in the early '70s. The first was a coop called Friends Records where you could trade in your old records and buy new - new single discs were $3.68. They also had a huge rack of the original TMOQ boots for $1.99 each. The other store was Disc Records which would get in a big box of UK imports on a regular basis - back before they started using shrink wrap. I went in sometime between October and November of '72 and found this gem. Original pressing with the Purple Records labels and slick cover. I don't think we played anything else but this and Live at Leeds for a month. Blew our heads off then and still love it today.

 

Remembering that this was not released in the US, and was a Japanese import usually on 8 Track on Purple. Thats how I first heard it on my buddys tape player in his car.

The band was just on.

When the greatest rock live albums are discussed, this one has to duke it out with Live At Leeds for the top spot, IMO.

 

I bought this at age 13 in 1980 and wore it out. I was a big Gillan Purple MkII fan back in those days and through my teens, and came to appreciate the Rod Evans MkI days as well. I've started going back and listening to DP again over the last few years, and Made in Japan definitely has that energy that made this lineup so special

 

This live document is timeless.... the best one of all Classic Rock live albums!

The spoken intro and then the guitar on Smoke on the Water never fail to get my hair standing on end (and things falling off the shelf - play loud!!). Wish I had been there.

 

MiJ ~ Space Truckin' has been responsible for more blown speakers than Lugnut's Stranglehold

My 1st & 2nd MiJ cassettes had Scotch tape slices all over them. Most played tape I ever had.

I can let Made In Japan play for weeks in my car.

 

How does it sound, compared with the great sounding USA Warner Bros old CD?

Great live albums from the 70s (regular release or archival) are a stack waist high.

Made in Japan should be near the top of that pile.
