I turned it on when they announced it, but I think I'm going to turn it back off. I didn't realize that, unlike when someone pays with Paypal, Discogs wouldn't be processing the payment (that is, sending my dough to my bank) immediately or next day, like Square and other payment schemes do. They want to sit on it and take the float for a week, and to get prompt processing you have to pay 30 cents per deposit. Plus they take their nut right away rather than billing once a month, so they take away my float, too. The .02% discount they are offering over Paypal saved me about 9 cents on the 40 dollar record I just sold and cost me 21 cents (.30 - .09) to retrieve. Payments through Paypal (which all of my infrequent Discogs sales have been up until now) work fine for me.

good to know. i'd ignored it simply because i wasn't interested in hassling with non-paypal transactions at this time.

I was not even aware of this service. Their advertisement must have sucked. :)

Are we talking about how they take credit cards now?

If so, what I don't like is that I can not do shipping through paypal. Discogs shipping is much higher. That's where they are really making some extra money.

You can ship any package using Paypal's shipping, even if the item was not purchased through Paypal. It's somewhat hard to find on Paypal's site, but it's called Paypal Multi-order Shipping.

I did just send a record paid with Paypal with Discogs shipping, and for an international order it was significantly cheaper than the rate quoted by USPS online. It was a cheap order and I didn't have much to lose, but assuming it arrives OK (it's still USPS, provided by Endicia at Commercial Base prices - which are not quoted online but are the same rates eBay offers on shipping) I'll use Discogs shipping in the future for international sales there. Haven't checked domestic rates.

discogs about to get very weird from July 1 for us non-US sellers.
so me, a seller in Japan, with nothing to do with the USA, has to file tax forms or some crap from Jul 1?

ok, so as our U.S pals say "let me see if I've got this straight". One random country has decided to collect sales tax from every other country in the rest of the world? I must have it wrong. If I have to do one scintilla of work with all that "upload SUV inventory" bollocks then I'm out. Dude. i'm a waster. Not a goddamn G-7 accountant for Google. I'll just block the whole country. Or, failing that, could just put up a nasty wee notice in my sellers terms saying "sure, US buyers, go ahead and buy my stuff BUT if you're from one of the 21 states that require me to go through the rigmarole of filing sales taxes in your stupid state which has nothing to do with me then I am going to have to cancel your order. Nothing personal buddy but the last thing I need is Seal Team 6* rappeling down and through my balcony window here in Japan, screaming their heads off about $3.86 cents of unfiled tax forms in the state of West Dakota or some crap.

*of course, I'm being silly with the Seal Team 6 thing. $3.86 would make me a low priority target. Seal Team 3 would probably suffice.

No. Sellers who live in many but not all states in the US are required to collect sales taxes for items shipped to their state. You have no US state to collect taxes for, so no taxes will be collected on your sales. You may rest easy.

  13. You have nothing to fear as a seller in Japan. A few high-tax states in the U.S. are punishing their own citizens. The onus will fall on your customers to self-report the tax on their yearly taxes if it meets some certain threshold.

Basically what's happened is that states are aggressively going after tax revenue from Internet commerce.

I wonder what the threshold will be. My state is on that list unfortunately...

So buying from US seller from AU I'm going to have to pay US state sales tax and AU govt GST ?

This better get displayed before purchase decision.

No, sales taxes in the US are assessed and collected by the individual state. You have no US state to remit taxes to and will not pay sales tax on items shipped from the US. It's the destination shipped to that determines the tax.

If the threshold exists it is already there, you can read about it on your state's tax forms. Following the directions on those forms, you are probably legally required to report the amount you have paid to vendors for items purchased outside of the state, and pay your state's sales tax on them. Much like you are also required to drive 65 miles an hour on most interstate highways.

Do you guys think that this action can drive customers back to eBay? They haven’t announced anything of this sort.

  19. No chance that eBay tries to dodge taxes for its customers. Some states are already collecting sales tax on secondhand merchandise on eBay by private sellers.
