    haha.. very good! :righton:
my fave of the Charlie Rich Quad mixes is "Every Time You Touch Me (I Get High)", its lovely!

speaking of lovely things, a CBS Quad gold label's rather scrummy and here's Charlie's "Behind Closed Doors" SQ record labels to gawp at until such time as some enterprising label liberates the Quads from the vault (over to you, DV!)..

I think the Every Time You You Touch Me (I Get High) album is perhaps Charlie's most underrated album. Thom Jurek at All Music compared it to Ray Charles great county-pop masterpiece, Modern Sounds In Country & Western Music. The title cut, with its sexy lyrics and glistening strings by Bill McElhiney, is simply glorious, and Hargus "Pig" Robbins piano playing throughout the title song are stupendous. His lovely wife, Margaret Ann, wrote the stellar Pass On By, a smokey and bluesy lounge standard that you could picture Ray Charles singing. Rich's own Midnight Blues is a stunner as well, once agin with Robbins standout piano and some fantastic cascading strings by Bergen White. This album was a sonic masterpiece by producer Billy Sherrill and Charlie's vocals were never any better.

Thanks, Brad. This is stupendous news as Charlie's Behind Closed Doors album, along with his follow-up Epic albums, are all do for a remaster, especially Very Special Love Songs. I know we got the great BGO release of the later Epic albums, but it would be fantastic to get an SACD of his masterpiece breakthrough album, Behind Closed Doors and any one of his follow-up Epic albums.

I did my part the other night in sending an e-mail to Dutton-Vocalion concerning Behind Closed Doors and for more Philadelphia International Records albums.

great job! :righton: i imagine if DV are going to issue any Charlie Rich Quads,
"Behind Closed Doors" would be a priority but we shall see when the next slew of releases is revealed.

meantime, I'm hoping they might release the rest of the PIR Quads in pretty timely fashion as they've already put out all 3 Billy Paul albums that saw Quad release in one fell swoop, so there's 'only' 8 more PIR Quads they could do now (2 x MFSB's, 2 x Harold Melvin's & 4 x O'Jays).

fingers crossed they do all the Philadelphia International's, they're all wonderful and half of those Quads were SQ-only back in the 70's with no discrete Q8 release.

I see that Dutton-Vocalion has a Charlie Rich SACD up for pre-order with his Silver Fox and Very Special Love Song albums on a twofer CD. Wow, I preordered this one right away. I am not sure about the release date though.

  10. I have several Quad Charlie Rich LP's. All his pop hits of the early-70's. Trouble is, they are SQ matrix quad. Many of the SQ quad records make better stereo records than for their matrix quad. Epic also released a Q8 true quad tape cartridge. Their speed was 3.75 i.p.s., so you gotta put up with tape hiss. The CBS group wasn't in to reel-to-reel quad tapes, so they missed out on a better format. Some of those early quad recordings have been released on 4.0 hybrid SACD's, such as what Audio Fidelity has been doing, and this might be the first time those glorious quad mixed have been available in discrete and hissless quad.

Are these two two of the very best (other than his big two hits not appearing here) Epic titles?

they were both Number 1 albums on the U.S. Country Chart.

that said, "Behind Closed Doors" & "Every Time You Touch Me I Get High" were also Number 1 Country albums, he was really riding high at this stage.

there's an 'Entertainer Of The Year' diddy little pink sticker plastered over my SQ LP of "The Silver Fox" and not unlike the sticker its quite a cute album, like a retrospective without being a Greatest Hits necessarily, in which he gives little alternate versions of songs throughout his career with a sort of potted life story narration linking them.

"Very Special Love Songs" is an album proper, in the traditional sense rather than the narration linked career overview style of Silver Fox. It lacks the mega hits of "Behind Closed Doors" but it still has several very nice tracks including 'Almost Persuaded' and the title track, even my beat up SQ LP sounded great and the mix typical CBS discrete style of surround presentation, so even though I'd rather it were "Behind Closed Doors" & "Every Time You Touch Me I Get High" because I really love those particular albums I'm still greatly looking forward to the SACD.

I received my Charlie Rich twofer SACD of The Silver Fox/Very Special Love Songs and I am very pleased with the sound. Now, I do not have an SACD or quad set up so its just the stereo CD layer for me and it sounds great to my ears, definitely no loudness wars here as I could crank up the volume on this beauty. Great remastering by Michael J. Dutton as usual. Nice dynamics as well. Now, my only complaint is the lack of new liner notes and the small booklet, which is really just a four page cover. There are good album credits on the back of the CD, which lists the original album credits, like producer Billy Sherrill and arrangers Bergen White, Bill McElhiney and Cam Mullins as well as the background vocalists and songwriters.

I am curious to see if they end up releasing Charlie Rich's most heralded album, Behind Closed Doors, in this great twofer SACD format. I wonder what other Epic album they might choose for the next twofer coupling with the Behind Closed Doors album.

there's 3 Charlie Rich Quads DV could release on SACD, the Epic "Best Of" compilation from 1972, "Behind Closed Doors" and "Every Time You Touch Me I Get High". all great albums, hope they do them all!

This would be a tough choice for me. Obviously you want Behind Closed Doors as one of the album twofers, and I absolutely love the Every Time You Touch Me I Get High album, but I have two CD versions of that baby as well as the fact that BGO just released a two disc version with Rich's later 1970's albums last year. Now, some of those songs on the Best Of are hard to come by or are not included on any CD at all IIRC. Tough call for me!

Sadly, I fear the BGO 2CD fourfer may be OOP as they've removed its listing from their website.

Good, as it means that D/V (also in the U.K.) would be more likely to be interested it issuing it.

    Me
sounfs like Behind Closed Doors and Best of on a single disc then. But was "Best of" mixed and issued in quad? If not then "Every Time" must be the choice. Because we are talking about a quad 2-fer on SACD.

Yes indeed, it looks like Best Of was also issued in quad as evidenced by @fredblue's post #14 above with the picture of the quad vinyl cover.

This thread reminded me (thanks) that I had meant to buy this (Behind Close Doors) on vinyl last year, so just ordered a copy off Discogs that looks great value...

yes! The 1972 Best Of Charlie Rich compilation was remixed in Quad by Lou Bradley and released by Epic on SQ-encoded LP and Q8 tape in 1974 - and its a cracker! a fun discrete mix, it sounds lovely and has some great tracks. hoping DV put it out on SACD someday, its a gem.

the new Charlie Rich Hybrid SACD 2-fer of "Behind Closed Doors" & "Every Time You Touch Me (I Get High)" featuring the Quadraphonic mixes of both albums available for the first time in over 40 years, along with new high-resolution remasters in Stereo, from Dutton Vocalion, is out now :edthumbs:
