What's a fair price range to be shelling out for one of these?

$100 - $200 range is most common here. As low as $65 and as high as $250 for one that was in perfect condition all the way around.

I got lucky and mine sold for $750 :yikes:

Not the norm now at all. Glad I sold it when they were crazy hot. Mine was the goldface black triangle if I am remembering these things correctly.

You're combining a black triangle, and a half black face. Yours had black on the right side of the face, leaving the rest gold. It's also a step higher than what's being discussed here. Yours was THE big Kahuna. Japan for Japan. Ours was / is a solid silver silver face, with black font. Japan for US.

Rather it was the gold faced not a triangle but black sectioned. Looks like one went unsold for 2 grand :yikes::yikes::yikes:

I sold one for $325 (EX/EX) just a little over 10 years ago. Paid $8 for it the week prior. :D

Has anyone checked the prices on discogs/ebay lately? 35DP-4 1A1 is going for a cool $500 these days.

Curious if anyone knows of other places to look for this. I "found" a digital copy of this some time back, I quite like it, and would love to pick up a physical disc, but $500 is just too much to ask.

It appears that Discogs and eBay are the only game in town for you these days. Everywhere else, including Japan sites, comes up dry.

Darn. I suppose I'll wait until after the holiday season and see if there's a price drop, but at $500 this is a non-starter for me. Out of curiosity, are the early Japan for US (CK 33453) presses also two-track? Does it also have pre-emphasis? I see that the matrix code on these is indeed 35DP-4. I seemed to see some indication of that on discogs, but the pictures of the disc sure make it look like a 5-track. Very confusing. Having a similar issue with the various iterations of DSOTM CP35-3017, which looks like it had several Japanese re-issues from 1984 - 1989. Are these more or less the same as the original 1983 disc with pre-emphasis?

My head is spinning with all of these minor permutations, tbh. Makes it hard to trust what you're getting on ebay, or even discogs for that matter.

As far as I'm aware the Japan for USA WYWH with the 35DP-4 matrix is the same 2 track mastering as the Japan for Japan 35DP-4. For DSOTM some say the Japan for Europe Black face CD with the CP35, non-TO, matrix is the same as the Black triangle Japan for Japan non-TO matrix. IMO the TO matrix CD's, Toshiba plant, just don't sound as good as the CBS/Sony pressings. YMMV

Thanks for the info, Dave. Much appreciated. I may just go for the less "prestigious" pressings, after all, the sound is what I care about. If the mastering is the same, then the price of those early pressings seems like more of a trophy hunt than any type of audible difference.

:tiphat: You're welcome. It can seem that way and I used to believe exactly like you do. However, my sound world got turned on its head when I heard two identical MFSL Gold CD's, including their matrix, sound like a night and day difference. It's a quagmire and a rabbit hole you don't want to fall into without plenty of disposable $$$$'s.

When I found mine about a year ago, it looked like a few of the others I found that I thought were grail copies. Until I put them in a CD player and saw the 5 tracks. The 2 track I finally landed also had a smooth side case, no "Now Made in the USA" on the back, but when I popped it into a CD player, it read 2 tracks. Now I'm riding the gravy train! My favorite digital copy, and I have the Mastersound, the SACD, a whole bunch of US from early to recent, a few Japan for US, and a UK.

Good luck! If I find another, I'll give you a call. :)

I had a chance to hear this the other day (a friend of mine's dad had the disc) and to be honest, I don't see what all the hype is about. Sure it sounds good but the high-end sounded harsh to me. I think I still prefer the Sony Mastersound best. The version he had is the one shown above (2 track Japanese disc with 35DP4 on the disc). Anyone else still prefer the Sony Mastersound or any of the other discs instead? Does the disc have pre-emphasis or something?

If the high end sounded harsh, your CD player didn't properly detect the pre-emphasis on this disc. When played on equipment that can handle de-emphasizing necessary on some of the oldest Japanese CDs, the high end shouldn't sound harsh at all.
