No it does not destroy the "coding" of the stereo mix as intended.

I think new things that folks have not tried, especially when they are older tend to frighten them. Not that you are old, I have no idea, but you are settled into thinking or worrying that something is destroyed with four speakers.

You really have no clue about recording events. I have no clue either. There are simply too many variables, too many different mixed recordings, etc. for anyone to know that front center and just behind that is a wonderful jazz band playing in RVG's living room. This could be true, and it could also be false, it really depends.

I seem to be the only talking about on-axis listening and how to get the most out of that. And the analogy of 4 speakers to headphone listening, one would think others would pick up on that virtue. Both on-axis and headphone listening fly in the face of stereo coding being destroyed, and scenes appearing behind the sound field but only with two speakers.

Compression has nothing to do with dolby pro logic II, Circle surround, Logic 7, ect.

Wasn't the impedance problem solved on the first page. Maybe I missed something...

It was at least discussed. Whether or not OP's amplifier gets along with the load is not yet known.

You mean Dolby PL 2, DTS Neo, Rock Arena and all that other junk doesn't process, compress and give you junk sound?

Would the naysayers dismiss the efficacy of stacked Quads?

Well, one of McIntosh's customers didn't have a problem with a pair of stacked ML4Cs, powered by a pair of mighty MC2300s. :)

Frank McIntosh himself had the same setup.

This is old facts. You can get maximum width with a four-speaker setup, but not depth using the X/Y or M/S microphone placement method during recording. The Hafler stereo setup is a reasonable compromise.

OMG! Frank wouldn't really do that, would he? And all the while, we considered him to be one of us "audiophiles".

Probably had the damned things connected with 16-gauge RCA speaker wire too.

Now, let's see the front quad!

I don't use it and you may not like how it sounds but it doesn't have anything to do with compression. Also, you said you have NEVER tried any of those settings so why comment on it. Many people do use it, like it or not.

To be more specific; By your standards you are maximising the width effect by using quadraphonic but you will loose the depth effect of stereo. I don't say anything what people prefer; if they want to have four speakers coding for the same information in the stereo content, fine by me. Or headphones. But I am fond of the LEDE concept and has therefore no interest in listening to quadraphonics or headphones for regular use since I want to have the psychoacoustic effects of depth. Now and then I use matrix decoders and it depends on the recording. For pure x/y or similar I just prefer the LEDE setup.

LEDE: Live End Dead End. So are many recording studio setup and I tend to have damping around the speakers and more reflective part around the listening area.

I do too listen in a living room. I don't overdo any damping or diffusion, but try to have a balance. But I have damping panels behind speakers that are designed to be close to wall. I used to have more damping panels at the speaker wall but some compromises have to be done. Good results can however be had even with modest room treatments.
