Yes, of one person, the definition of an anecdote.

In any case, my personal experience differs from yours, but my point is neither supports a broad conclusion.

Hope things work out better for you in your future record shopping endevours.

A local record store refuses to post up any “rules” in fear of bad Yelp! reviews. Their rules we’ve had convos about tend to circle around comments and behaviors seen daily, but it’s a record store...I guess you need to switch careers if it bugs you that bad, right?

  5. If I hadn't been there before I would probably visit because of those rules. They make perfect sense and are very reasonable.

Such rules, do not make me feel comfortable and easy - which is the essence of having a hobby (unless collecting is a sickness as a world famous art collector once said).

I don't give a damn about record shop rules. If I find something I've been looking for in nice condition for a fair price I'll buy it regardless. I wouldn't hold their rules against them. It's their shop, not mine.

Seriously though I would take it as fair warning - these guys take themselves way too seriously and look down on their customers and thus can't be trusted to treat you fairly.

British humour .. love it !
I don't buy or sell vinyl anymore,
don't travel, so likely I won't end up
in their shop, unless of course the
Doctor pops 'round in the TARDIS and
invites me to join him in paying a visit,
in which case I'm liable to spend hours
there before returning home again prior
    to having left, of course.

Completely agree. I think any form of trade/business should be an equal exercise in respect, behaviour etc. But the pendulum has swung too far in favour of the customer, with the seller expected to put up with any nonsense from the buyer - look at the ebay bias towards buyers, for example, where sellers cannot leave negative feedback for buyers who are rude or unreasonable or don't even pay for their purchase.

Methinks some people on this thread are taking the "rules" too seriously...

Still don’t like a list of rules. I know that I’ll be more careful than they will with vinyl.

    Or many personal experiences.

For cryin' out loud, this is a bunch of guys spouting off on a music forum. We're not doing scientific research here.

I think I'd be annoyed by rule #4 more than any others. If you can't be bothered to sticker all the 45's at least keep the unmarked ones a consistent price. The cheaper they are the more I'd buy but if I have to guess the price I'm not getting many; especially at $3 a pop for a common 45....

I contacted Val once since I'm in his area. I don't get that guy, but I imagine he likes to sell only to friends or otherwise just keep his collection around. Browsing is pretty key to record store buying. How many of you go into used record shops with a list of exactly what you want? Sometimes I don't know I want something until I see it. I emailed him once asking him if he had specific records I wanted to throw into my jukebox, and while I can't recall the exact response I got, it was enough to tell me I might as well just buy elsewhere.
