I thought it a more than adequate comic book extravaganza. But it did not deserve the stratospheric hype. It was ok.
Roma will win the Oscar for best foreign film, no way Best Picture. Saw it last night, it will be too painfully slow for many people and too upsetting for others. Beautiful film though.
Blu Ray screeners now actually. This is the first year in the BD format I believe. Each disc is watermarked specifically to the recipient to discourage bootlegging. A friend of mine actually won an Oscar several years ago and was gracious enough to lend his copy to my wife and I
Finally saw it tonight and pretty much enjoyed it. Thought Rami Malek was terrific and really couldn’t have been any better. Couldn’t care less about any chronological inaccuracies in the storyline. Completely understood why they changed the order of things for dramatic flow. But jeez, the CGI for the Live Aid crowd was terrible. The main downside for me was the movie was loaded down with every rock bio pic cliche imaginable. I felt like I was watching a TV movie of the week at times and some of the dialogue was cringing. Felt really fake, dumb and contrived. ”Turn Up The Treble”. Hilarious that Golden Globes gave this Best Picture. Rami really was fantastic though. Enjoyed the scenes between Freddie & Mary the most. Went with a good friend who’s more of a Queen fan than I am and she felt the same. A woman on the other side of me though said to me at the end “ isn’t that the greatest movie you’ve ever seen?”. She said she’s seen it 8 times. I can certainly see why people really dig it.
Studio personnel give us questionnaires that asked us if we would be interested in a sing-along version when we saw the film the first weekend.
Just noticed that my second-run theater has the sing-along for its weekend afternoon screenings. Knowing that place (one of our last Rocky Horror outposts), this movie could be there for years.
Agreed.... I lost the vote when our boss took us all to the movies over the holidays, everyone on my team wanted to see it. All were marginal Queen fans, most them liked it, if not loved it. But I thought it was a few notches above a Lifetime movie. I thought Malek was OK, but he looked so small. He looked to me like a kid dressing up for Halloween. But I'm a hug Queen fan so maybe I have a chip on my shoulder. I'm glad though that it seems to give new life to Queens music
Which is weird, cos Rami and Freddie are almost exactly the same height and body build. I think Rami is only an inch shorter. I know Freddie can appear larger than life, but I was so glad Sacha Baron Cohen didnt get to play him, because of the huge height disparity amongst other things.
It's actually a brilliantly made film (direction, cinematography, editing and cast) with a script that takes a lot of liberties. Best picture? Not so sure about that.
