I’m curious. The VN 160 and VN 150 don’t seem that sonically different. I currently have a VN 150. Where would you place your VN in your TT journey from a sonic perspective? I.e., how did it compare and measure up to the other fine tables you’ve had or still have?

    Love that list.
I'd be curious about that as well.

Nice list, John. Quick question, I'm thinking of picking up a Dual and was curious what table you liked the best. Thanks!

If memory serves that Dual 721 was a nice sounding table. I worked at Crazy Eddie during the time this table was around and nothing I switched it out for, except the Thorens and Sota years later, was a better listening experience.
These Duals are affordable and are great. Get an old Shure or Empire cartridge and your set. No need to spend a small fortune.
I wish an Empire EDR-9 was around. Take care, John M.

Thanks, John. I'm considering picking up a restored 1219 that's available locally and was curious what you thought about them.

Wow your working my memory. My Mom bought this table for "Us" to play our records sometime in the mid 70s, I remember cause when I played it all five Planet of the Apes films were playing at our drive in and my attention went to the Apes.
After I went "Ape" I settled down getting to know this table and playing everything I could. One thing I did love was that the Dual did not "howl" like the Garrard plastic based turntable we had, in all fairness when a wood base was gotten for the Garrard table the rumbling mostly ceased.
I loved this table, it to me was my intro to hifi, and as Im writing I must make sure I get my tables in chronological order. The Dual was the table that the salesman would lift the front and demonstrate that it could still play well at a 45 degree angle. So I was sold.
Duals were the tables, the 1219 the first, that my Moms family were adamant about getting for every hifi setup in those far off days. They were all musicians and music based teachers and engineers and their influence was the bases of my ideas and small musical talent.
Remember the direct drive craze in those years, the Duals are Idler drive same idea maybe, and the lament that one family member expressed. I did not hear a difference but some years later compared the 721? to the Thorens 160? and the Thorens sounded smoother but it had a better cartridge if memory serves.
This stinks, the Duals are a blur cause both the 1219 and 721 were working at the same time in my familys home 1974-79.
Im looking to get a Dual again especially cause one could be had for a great price Im told.
Ill go through some old photos and try to jar it all lose.
    Have fun, John.

Yeah. I'd say the VN TD-160 was on the same level, but different sounding than the Clearaudio Concept. Clearaudio being slightly more hifi sounding and the TD-160 being a bit more romantic. Both of those tables bettered the non-VN TD-160.

From there my journey has been upward... VPI was better than those by a decent margin, LP12 (with Ekos, Cirkus and Armageddon) bettered that and then the Garrard 301 (refurbed by Chris at Woodsong, Woodsong Plinth, Schick 12" arm) bettered that. I feel pretty confident that I've got my endgame table - but who knows!

That's why I'm looking to get one. I like to try new stuff and I've been interested Idler wheel tables for a while now. It should be fun to pick one up and try it with a few different carts.

I'm looking to eventually get a Garrard, but I'd love a Linn as well. I prefer the 401 aesthetics, but I wouldn't mind the 301 either!

Hopefully one day I'll be able to justify having a Linn and this 301 :)

Nice progression. Once I discovered Rega I went from RP1 (no longer in use) to RP6 (I currently own and use two) to RP10 (also in use).
