Agreed this sounds like a pre-emphasis issue, harsh is about the last thing I would use to describe the 35DP-4, especially compared to the Mastersound Gold which has a spike in the lower treble.

So anyway, he was willing to part with it for $75. I guess he didn't listen to any of his CDs anymore after putting them all in his iTunes. I took it home and made a rip. It does sound smoother with de-emphasis applied. What type of system are you guys listening on? I just don't feel like it's leaps and bounds better than the Sony Mastersound which I really liked a lot.

My gear is in my profile. I've listened to it on my Quad ESL57, Harbeths and Stax SR-009 headphones. For digital conversion I use a Merging NADAC on my speaker system and a custom R2R DAC with my headphones. I've also heard it on my friend's large Avant-garde speakers, he has a Naim CD555 CD player.

If you have heard the DSOTM non-TO mastering the 35DP-4 basically sounds like that- incredibly dynamic, smooth, not lacking in detail and with amazing presence. I think the more full range and large scale your system sounds the better these type of highly dynamic masterings sound.

The UK vinyl first matrix is also sublime.

If you have any hifi dealers around you offer to buy them lunch and see if they'll let you crank the disc on one of their big systems.

I'll have to try it on a better system. Currently I just have my FiiO players and Sennheiser HD598SE headphones which I would just consider a mediocre mobile listening setup. I do like my Blackface Harvest DSOTM for the reasons you mentioned. Maybe this one will grow more on me with more listening.

If only someone could've gotten through to me back then. $350.00 (Collector's condition) , only to sell it for half that years later.

My system is in my profile. It’s midrange, but good enough for me to appreciate this disc compared to other masterings. Like hvb said, I find it very warm, smooth, relaxed. Some people think it’s “too” relaxed, actually. I have the Mastersound too, and I think it’s pretty good, but to me there’s some weird artifacting in the upper-mid/high frequency that makes listening to it rather unpleasant (to me, at least.)

Me personally my top 3 WYWH discs would probably be:

    35DP-4
Immersion blu ray audio / SACD original stereo mix
    1994 Sax remaster

Don’t sleep on the Sax...it’s really nice, and can be had cheap if people don’t feel like dropping huge loot on either 35DP-4 or CK 33453 2-track JPN for US

I've probably posted this in another WYWH thread, this is an album I have never heard a bad sounding version of (some are not quite to my taste, but it's never bad). More bands would be lucky to have the amazing treatment Pink Floyd has had on digital.

A good mastering of the mono mix of Piper on digital is all I can ask for.

    a simple question:
under the audio point of view what are the differences between the 35DP4, the CK 33453 with and without writing: now made in the USA on the back of the case?
    thank you all

Without "made in USA" if the matrix number of CK 33453 includes 35DP-4, it's the identical 2-track mastering that the Japanese 35DP-4 has. If it does include "Made in USA", it's a later 5-track mastering of the album.

Here is a link to the CK 33453 CD which has identical mastering to 35DP-4:

Pink Floyd - Wish You Were Here

you'll note in the images, that the matrix should appear as below, with some variation to last 4 digits on the right depending on specific pressing:

The later version of the disc (5-track), is listed here:

Pink Floyd - Wish You Were Here

And this is what the matrix runout for that CD looks like:

In terms of audio quality, 35DP-4 sounds incredible, once de-emphasis is applied - early Japanese CDs had pre-emphasis added, and this either needs to be de-emphasized by your CD player or with software (search other forum threads to find out about pre-emphasis), depending on how you plan to listen to it. The later mastering is still quite nice (most versions of this disc sound pretty good, tbh), but is a bit brighter than 35DP-4. 35DP-4 is very smooth, relaxed, and has incredible dynamic range. It is my preferred digital version.

È la mia versione digitale preferita. thank you very much...

Most say the next-best sounding early press version of WYWH is the European "blackface" (below):

Pink Floyd - Wish You Were Here

I am not sure if this differs significantly from CK 33453. Perhaps others can comment.

EDIT: Here is additional info about the "blackface" (CDP 7 46035 2) release, and CK 33453, seems they are different masterings:

    CDP 7 46035 2:

    Pink Floyd Archives-U.K. CD Discography

    CK 33453:

    Pink Floyd Archives-U.S. CD Discography

Note the very different peak values per track.

    i buy this: in CD is Matrix / Runout (Variant 4): CDP 7 46035 2 3A3

He still has to get me.
    it's right?
    What does 3A3 mean?
what are the differences with 1A1?

It's a later disc, although probably the same mastering. I believe it's also made by Toshiba.

If you can open the case, just check the disc has 35DP-4 in its matrix.

Same mastering, just a later press of the CD, as Dave indicated. If you look at the links I posted above (pinkfloydarchives.com) it shows all of the matrix variants for this release of the album. Both 1A1 and 3A3 are listed there.

Speaking of pinkfloydarchives.com does anyone else get non-responsive/timed out page loading? I'm using Firefox private browsing and duckduckgo. This has been an issue for years for me in the GWN. I used to be able to get it. I can only get to Vernon's site through Tor browser. I guess he just hates Canada. :sigh:
