These are artists that were met with either a collective "meh" or outright hatred when they were a performing group but years later have become canonized in the rock pantheon.
Basically bands like VU and Big Star. Include any you can think of.

Thelonious Monk, told to his face that he couldn't play for years but he stuck to his guns and eventually triumphed.

Nick Drake seems like the obvious parallel down to his premature death by potential suicide leaving behind a hauntingly beautiful body of work for a future generation to discover. Another artist that comes to mind is the 90s band Acetone. Completely ignored initally and while not “canonized” they received a nice set by Light in the Attic and finally positive critical reception 20 years too late

weren't both these bands fairly well received during their brief careers? sadly suicide in both cases ended a chance for acceptance while they were still building a career.

It’s a little hard to find real contemporary reviews now but from what I can find the reception was pretty tepid. Never a Pitchfork Zero Stars or anything but nothing exciting either. Apart from the lovely piece by Nick Kent that featured in NME but sadly not until after his death

Judee Sill - not that she is as widely recognized as VU or Big Star - but she has had, to my knowledge, more recognition in the last 10 years or so than she has in the last 2 decades or so.

Their case is a little different because they broke up before ever releasing any music. And apart from a few shows in NYC and one in California I don't think they ever really played outside of Massachusetts. So I think they were probably more unknown than ignored or disliked. The kind of quit before they started.

I think he was always considered a musician's musician. The only ones who told him he couldn't play were not into jazz. And that's probably still the case.

Serge Gainsbourg. A footnote outside France during his life now it's easier to find his music than Billy Joel or Boz Scaggs.

The Trashmen. Once considered as a joke now practically knocking on the door to the RRHoF.
The Monkees. Considered a joke at the time now basically the only thing keeping Rhino Records in business.
