Are you familiar with Something Beautiful by Margaret Mandolph?

The flip side of I Wanna Make You Happy, a song I completely adore!

Unfortunately the 45 sells for several hundred pounds or dollars these days ...

#1 hit singles are not usually considered. No.

It was number 1 only after becoming a cult favourite on the Northern scene.

You can find Northern Soul nights all around the country, where the faith is kept. You can see why I never dared to strut my stuff, when a Grey Panther's still better than I was, no spin no shag.

It was originally released in 1964. It only became a hit after is was embraced by the Northern Soul community.

What? Well, you were being a smart ass, so I threw one back, and you got lost. Music is about listening, not reading. You get it?

You asked what year it went number one, when the year was clearly in my post. That made me think you hadn't read it.

Here's probably the singular moment in Northern Soul:

Writer/producer Frank Wilson accidently gets a DJ hit on himself 12 years or so after recording the song for Motown via a stolen Motown test pressing.

The pettigree of the song itself is great:

Frank Wilson went on to write a dozen or so hits for The Supremes, Temptations, and Four Tops.

The drummer: it's the great Earl Palmer doing a knockout job doing his version of the Motown Beat.

Here is Frank Wilson joyously performing his hit for a ballroom full of soul fans.
