  1. Brian May's Red Special
    Clarence White's (and now Marty Stuart's) Parsons/White B-bender
    Junior Brown's Guit-steel
    Tony Hick's Banjitar

Not just played by unique guitarists but also unique instruments in their own right.

No one has yet mentioned Peter Green's famous 1959 Les Paul, "Greeny", with the out-of-phase wired pickups which was later owned by Gary Moore, and is now owned by Kirk Hammett of Metallica. I think I read he paid a million for it.

I just saw Marty Stuart play it last month.

That one is so unusual, with the crazy added early B Bender thing happening, I might list it as an icon.

To most guitarists, most of these have some kind of iconic value.

Also Trey Anastasio made the Languedoc guitar pretty iconic (it even has its own emoticon).

A model that's not been mentioned yet:

    Fender Mustang - Kurt Cobain

As well as the aforementioned Jaguar and the JagStang, which only really existed briefly because he wanted it, even though he died before it was released.

And because of Lemmy, Mike Mills and Rick Foxton I had to get me (more than) one of those Rickenbacker basses.

But most people seem to think of the Tiger:

Neither one were made by Alembic, though Doug Irwin once worked for them, he was in business on his own by the time he started making guitars for Garcia.

Garcia had at least 4 with the Tiger shape, Tiger and its successor Rosebud were made by Irwin, another luthier from Florida named Steve Cripe made 2 with similar shape (though the horns a bit pointier,) which Garcia played in later years.

The main innovation of those guitars was the on-board effects loop, which Garcia and Irwin seem to have invented together.
