So people are mentioning Telecasters, Strats, and Les Pauls now? I thought the idea was to mention unusual or off brand guitars that musicians used regularly. I guess I don’t get it

Certainly. Though the guitar he tracked so many great tunes was somewhat unique that it had a P90 pickup in neck and Dimarzio Super Distortion in the bridge.

I encouraged everyone to post whatever they wanted

However I also mentioned I would NOT be categorizing straight ahead guitars like strats, teles, les pauls... unless they were very unusual in some way.

But, whatever you wanna post, go for it. "Iconic" is a subjective term. In my subjective opinion.

OK.... except he doesnt play Epiphones, does he? Isnt he always either a Gibson or custom guy?

still the cross fret markers are unusual, I'd vote for that.

Here’s Jack’s bass from the 2005 reunion. It looks a bit like Paul’s Hofner but it’s obviously a different make and model.

  10. I was only 8 at the beginning of the 60s but...
As I understand it 1959 was a bad year for rock'n'roll. Chuck Berry in jail. Elvis in the Army. DJ Allan Freed convicted of payola. Buddy Holly. Richie Valens. Dead.
And yes, the rise of Elvis wannabes like Fabian and a bunch of guys named Bobby.
And the death of JFK in 63. Then The Beatles hit Ed Sullivan in Feb. 64, and it felt good to be alive again.
So people want to remember it as a low period for rock. But The Beach Boys were releasing albums. Four Seasons too. Motown.
And in jazz you had great albums by Miles and Coltrane. Blues was happening with Freddie King, B.B. and Muddy.
So the early 60s were probably better than some remember.

Yeah, the Epiphone is his 'custom model' that you can buy that I am sure is lower quality than what he really plays. I just thought the photo looked cool.

and I always think of the Allman Brothers.

Duane had one he used all the time in the very early days, and Dickie famously played a gold top all the time in the Brothers.

I did see the Scholtz gold top in concert. And Dickie on a gold top.

Haven't seen Cliff Gallup's mid-50s Gretsch mentioned. Ask Jeff Beck what he thinks of it. He dedicated an entire album (Crazy Legs) to Gallup's style and the tone of his guitar.

Grant Green, used several different guitars but always had that mess of strings 'cause he refused to clipe 'em - claimed it affected the sound.

Many guitars in this thread are no iconic guitars! What is an iconic guitar? The Les Paul or Strat are iconic guitars. Rare guitars... played by xy are no iconic guitars IMO.

Joan Jett - white Gibson Melody Maker. Originally purchased from Eric Carmen, who had used it on the Raspberries’ hits, and used by Joan on “I Love Rock And Roll” and her other mid-80’s hits. Still in Joan’s possession and retired.

George Harrison - “Lucy”, a gloss red Gibson Les Paul. Originally a gold top finish, owned by John Sebastian, traded to Rick Derringer, who had it refinished in red by Gibson and then sold it to a guitar shop in NY, where it was purchased by Eric Clapton, who then gifted it to Harrison, who named it “Lucy” (after redhead Lucille Ball). Used on the white album, including on “While My Guitar Gently Weeps” played by Clapton. Later stolen from Harrison’s home in Los Angeles and reacquired many years later by Harrison from a collector in Mexico.

Charlie Christian's Gibson ES-150. The first electric guitar of significance. Freddie Green played an electric earlier with Count Basie but Christian established it as a solo instrument with Benny Goodman.
