Tough to choose between those, but how do your picks for the others match up?

Man, my Aerosmith knowledge after Get A Grip really tails off, couldn't do the full list with any conviction.

Love both bands, and their albums are somewhat apples to oranges.

It wouldn't be fair to the Stones, since I am more familar with Aerosmith's post 70's work than the Stones.

However, my favorite (or most played) albums between both bands, from the "glory years" of each, would be...

    1. Rocks 1976
    2. Toys In The Attic 1975
    3. Exile On Main St. 1972
    4. Get Your Wings 1974
    5. Live! Bootleg 1978
    6. Let It Bleed 1969
    7. Draw The Line 1977
    8. Beggar's Banquet 1968
    9. Their Satanic Majesties Request 1967
    10. Night In The Ruts 1978

But it's all splitting hairs. Both catalogues more than speak for themselves. To quote Joe Perry: "let the music do the talking". :)

For two totally famous bands, it sure is hard to find die hard fans who have most of their albums.

There is one way that Aerosmith is like the Stones, and that is their so called *Fans*.
They say they love the bands, but then we all know that if you only own half the albums you really do not love them.
They can’t Love Aerosmith (Stones) if they do not like anything after “Done With Mirrors” (”Tattoo You”).

I expected You, Dream, of all people, to be able to make a list.

Perhaps true. Although I think it's quite common for fans to really gravitate to a certain period or era of an artist they really love. I think the very thing that "hurts" bands like Aerosmith and the Stones is the same thing they are largely legendary for - longevity! In other words, when you are around that long, you are bound to have periods that don't resonate with the hardcore or original fan base.

I do agree, though, that my very favorite artists (top 3 or so artists) are there because I at least like, if not love, virtually everything they have done. That being the likes of Kiss, Zeppelin, etc. I am kinda all-in with those artists in a way that I may not quite be with other "great artists".

I have the Stones from their Debut up to Dirty Work. The sixties stuff is all the sacd's including the UK and US versions. I love the guys but don't feel the need to go past dirty work.
Aerosmith I have most of the seventies stuff and the stuff listed here.

Don't be surprised if in 10 or 20 years from now you own them all. As I get older I buy up my favorite bands albums because I am so desperate to hear *new* music by them.

It seems sad (and insulting to the artist) to think that some people think that a bands cover album is better than an album full of their originals.

I'm new to the forum:) and a longtime AeroFANatic.....I have all of their albums, and a few by the Stones (Exile, Let it Bleed, Bigger Bang, Sticky Fingers).

Let me say I have every studio recording by both bands but still can't do this, As someone else said it is apples to oranges. Both are Top 10 bands for me though I like the Stones a little better. The problem is the diminishing returns of both bands. Stones IMO were at their peak from 1963-1973....then the slide begins. Aerosmith were at their peak from 1973-1982, then their slide begins. I think both bands catalogues are way too strong for me to pick and choose during those aforementioned dates...it's all top shelf. Top 5 albums I can do for each from the 80's and beyond.....

    Rolling Stones:
    1. Tattoo You
    2. Voodoo Lounge
    3. Emotional Rescue
    4. A Bigger Bang
    5. Bridges to Babylon

    Aerosmith:
    1. Rock In a Hard Place
    2. Pump
    3. Permanent Vacation
    4. Done with Mirrors
    5. Get A Grip

I don't think either of their cover albums are necessarily better than their originals, but both Honkin' on Bobo and Blue & Lonesome are fun to listen to. Much less of a chore than slogging through Just Push Play, Nine Lives, Dirty Work and Undercover.

Both cover albums do suffer from being too loud and over compressed.

The only 1980-and-beyond album of the Stones I'll defend vigorously is Tattoo You, although Emotional Rescue is one I keep revisiting lately because I feel like I desperately want to appreciate it more.

For Aerosmith, Pump is a candidate for my favorite album of theirs, and Permanent Vacation is a monster as well. Beyond those two, I'd say they had several solid entries, but the two I mentioned are the really stellar ones.
