Wow I thought UK TV went colour generally in late 69'?
So majors shot some shows in colour in 67?
Wasn't there only a few channels anyway?

Tempted to say that it looked better then. But, to be fair, The Barbican has weathered pretty well compared with other tower blocks.

Fantastic thread! Not a Pathe film, but a Rank Organisation newsreel. Lots of great footage of Liverpool, the Cavern Club, The Escorts, The Aces, The Zephyrs, and The Swinging Blue Jeans. Excellent footage of the SBJs playing live and recording. @Steve Hoffman, I think this is the footage of the SBJs with Norman “Normal” Smith at Abbey Road that you were looking for.

Great footage of Ready Steady Go being put together, and Terry Sylvester fronting The Escorts! He went on the Swinging Blue Jeans himself, and then The Hollies of course.

Thank you! Not Pathe, but Rank. Was driving me buggy. Great footage. Much appreciated, MB!

  9. Is ‘Normal’ and Norman ‘Hurricane’ Smith one in the same?

The Helen Shapiro is a masterpiece, but I smell like cigarette smoke after watching.

It's a mindblower! How simple the setup looks, no partitions, musicians so close together....
Huge sounding record! Where did we go wrong...?.......

I think that song isn’t even four track. It was mixed live to stereo and mono direct.

Ha Yeah 1961, they wouldn't have had 4 track yet would they?

That typical '60s drum-style is fascinating; even Keith Moon did that same strange waving about with the sticks; with it some kind of trend with the drummers of that era or was it a showy thing to do when camera's were there?

    • There’s also a separate one featuring out takes from that shoot which is mixed in with shots of the countryside and ‘swinging’ London from other features.

Not an entertainment lawyer, but if so many great videos came from the same source, would it be possible for a DVD compilation of them to be issued today. Or are there so few of us interested that the market would not be large enough to warrant that?

There were just three channels back then - BBC1, BBC2 and ITV - the latter a network of over a dozen different regional broadcasters. BBC1 and ITV broadcast on VHF using the uniquely British 405 line system, whilst BBC2, which started in 1964, broadcast on UHF using 625 lines. BBC2 was only a part-time channel, by law, broadcasting mainly from early evenings onward, with the occasional coverage outside these hours for coverage of live events.

BBC2's colour service officially started in mid-1967, with the first broadcast being that year's Wimbledon Men's Singles final. There had been some colour test broadcasts on the channel before then, going back to the previous year. Even so colour was restricted just to London, with the service being rolled out around the country.

BBC1 and ITV went to colour in December 1969. The 405-line VHF system wasn't suitable for colour broadcasts, hence both of these channels had to migrate to a second 625 UHF network, using the same transmission towers as BBC2. It took some time to get the service rolled out, as new transmitters needed constructing due to UHF having a poorer range that VHF. My grandmother's town didn't get their own colour transmitter until 1974, for example, and the Channel Islands didn't get colour until 1976 due to the unique problems in getting a network feed to somewhere so far from the mainland.

The BBC1 and ITV 405-line VHF system was finally switched off in 1985.

More to do with drummers playing along to the recorded track and avoiding hitting the cymbals.
Lead to some very odd styles of mid air "drumming". Keith Moon of course took it to an OTT level on TOTP.
Look out for practice pads on early TV shows and plastic cymbals!
