My primary player is a tube-modified Modwright Sony XA5400ES SACD player. Though just last week I came across an Marantz DV9600 SACD/DVD player at Goodwill for $19.99. A few days ago I placed it into my main system and have been playing around with some dvd-a discs and sounds great! Think I'll keep it in my system for a while as a secondary player.

McIntosh MCD 201 CD/SACD player. This unit has been a source of occasional pain for me over the years (locking up, not reading disks, skipping, etc) until I took it to Audio Classics in NY for a repair. It has performed flawlessly since its return, very satisfied.

I got a new Sony UBPX800 universal for my living room last week. Loving it so far, though there is an odd handshake issue with my ancient Pioneer Elite receiver that necessitates using an older Yahama DVD-A/SACD changer for multichannel SACD. Everything else gets played by the Sony. It works very well with CD, DVD-Audio, Blu-Ray, stereo SACD, and streaming MP3s or high resolution FLAC/WAV files from my media server or streaming music from Pandora. VERY happy with this little guy, and it seems to be built very solid.

I currently have room for only one CD player in my main system, and it's an old Sony CD recorder that will only accept Music CDs as recordable input (RCD-W500C). It also has a 5 CD changer with an elevator mechanism. I mainly use the recording feature for needle drops (onto a Music CD-RW) since a direct hook up to my computer is very quirky.

I have a few CDP that I use. Most of them do not play SACD, and I use also a BDP for cd:s. I was surprised how nice sound my BDP had! It is a Panasonic and not so young either. Quite good sound for a player I bought used. :)

Recently I was given a Technics CD changer so I use it now in one of my systems, reserving the universal player for SACDs. I changed my vote to "Other".

I voted "other" because my main "CD player" isa transport and DAC combo from PS Audio (DirectStream Memory Player and DirectStream DAC). Plays cd, SACD et al.

For CDs an Onkyo c7030 as a transport feeding a Schiit Modi 2 multibit. Bang for the buck.

For movies a Sony bluray player.

I'm wondering about the handshake issue. Can't you just connect the Sony to your AVR via HDMI to enjoy multi-channel SACDs? Of course if the AVR does not have HDMI inputs you do indeed have a handshake issue there being no hand to shake.

I voted Universal as it plays CD, SACD, DVD-A and DVDs, but not Blu-ray. It is also a pre-amp / surround sound processor, though mostly used for 2 channels.

The 5400 was regarded by some to be the best from Sony. Sony dropped it from production and about a year later put it back into production for a short time. I was still too broke to purchase one, missing my second chance. At any rate, two years ago I did put enough together to buy an OPPO 205, which I use to enjoy multi-channel SACDs via RCA connection to my twenty year old Sony TA-P9000ES analog multi-channel preamplifier. I may buy a used 5400 if I can find one that is mint at a not so mint price.

Main listening (mostly headphone) - dedicated CD player - Technics SL-PG100. Very quite operation, which is very important as the player is right beside me. Pioneer DV-588a Universal for SACD & DVD-Audio
Second listening (speakers) - universal Sony DVP-NS755V for CD & SACD. PS4 for blu ray.
Living Room (mostly for TV/Movies) - universal Sony BDP380BX38
Garage - dedicated CD player - Mitsubishi DP-209R
Bedroom - universal Sony DVP-NS325 which is also very quite & plays MP3's which I use for audio books I've converted.
