    C) Are Dylan fans idiots?

  2. I can only speak for myself, so yes probably.

  3. Here's the thing pal : mmm isn't music, it's feedback. You may as well sit by your washing machine and groove to its cycles, or lie under electricity pylons and read melody into the hums. But each to their own.

Lou Reed made this album under the influence of a lot of drugs thinking it was the musical equivalent of Marcel Duchamps 'Fountain' or something. He probably regretted it by the time it got released (it was considered career suicide by many) but his huge ego never allowed him to admit it. Of course some of his hardcore fans went along with it and still consider it to be a great work of "art".

This is where you - and many others - are wrong. If it was that arbitrary how could you notate it and perform it with strings? As experimental orchestra Zeitkratzer did?

  7. You do realise that I could score the thrum of my generator? It's deep maaan. You might not 'get it'.

You can notate your own farts and perform it with strings. It doesn't mean a thing.

What really "doesn't mean a thing" is the ignorance on display here. Especially coming from big fans of Dylan and The Beatles! :biglaugh:

  12. Have you heard 'Triplicate'? You want atonality and an Avant Garde deconstruction of what constitutes 'music'? Makes MMM sound like fluffy pop...

Are you talking about Dylan in the mid to late 80s?

  16. Is that question the music nerd forum equivalent of ''I know you are but what am I?'

At least nobody is arguing that The Beatles are more avant garde than John Cage yet.

Why should it mean "a thing?" You sound like a Stalinist who declares only Soviet Socialist Realism is true art and any experiment is decadent farting.

This is a great album IMO. It's miles better than Lulu ever will be! Now that's what I call unlistenable. Is it the best album in Lou's catalog? No. Not by any means. But I still enjoy it for what it is. Metal Machine Music is interesting and holds my attention from beginning to end. Which is something Lulu can never do!

I actually wasn't aware there was a great deal of fuss. I thought the album came out, was negatively received by almost everyone who heard it, and that was that.

  23. I am old enough to say that I bought it when it came out. I was already a fan of VU and the solo stuff by Reed, Cale and Nico. I remember hating Rock 'n Roll Animal and thinking it was a lot of stadium rock crap with Steve Hunter's showboat guitar solos and I preferred the earlier studio or live versions of those songs. So I walked into a record store in a Framingham, MA shopping mall one day and saw this new record by Lou and since I was the sort of fan then that buys everything by a beloved artist I had to have it. The text on the cover of the shrinkwrapped double LP was definitely intriguing and he name drops La Monte Young (misspelling the name if I recall) and I was into all that avant-garde minimalist stuff as a teenager even then so it appealed to me. I took it to the counter and the clerk told me not to buy it and said I'd hate it, which of course made me want it even more. When I took it home and played it, I'd never heard anything like it because I don't think anyone had recorded anything like it before back in 1975. I can't say that listening then or now was or is an enjoyable experience, but I admire it for its extreme harshness and intensity and Lou for having the balls and the clout to release something like this back then.

I've never heard it in quad sound, but I thought at the time it would be the ideal 8-track tape since each of the four sides is equal in length and you could play it on repeat endlessly... though you wouldn't get the final locked groove experience. But MMM is in a class by itself. My favorite Lou Reed album is Berlin.
