(LP Blue Note Liberty Press Blue White Label Stereo BST 84063) 1967 .... recorded January 15th, 1961 @ Van Gelder Studio Englewood Cliffs .... Kenny Dorham (tp) + Hank Mobley (ts) + Kenny Drew (p) + Paul Chambers (b) + Philly Joe Jones (dr) .... excellent sounding Blue Note Liberty vinyl edition .... the music`s quality is beyond doubt anyway ....

    Charlie Christian At Minton's
original 10" first issued in 1947 on Vox (then licensed to Esoteric)
    * Features two killer tracks with a running time at just over 16 minutes. Charlie Christian's guitar sounds remarkably impressive and crystal clear. The session also features Thelonious Monk on piano.

The CD edition continues with all the music that was first issued on...

Charlie Christian | Dizzy Gillespie At Minton's

7 tracks on this album featuring a variety of different musicians. Here and there the sound quality may not be the best, but all things taken into consideration it is acceptable.

All music on this CD was recorded live in 1941.

8 out of the 9 tracks were also issued on the Esoteric album

(CD Blue Note Europe Press 7243 5 21956 2) 1999 .... recorded on February 12th + 18th and May 27th, 1961 @ Van Gelder Studio, Englewood Cliffs .... Wayne Shorter (ts) + Lee Morgan (tp) + Bobby Timmons (p) + Jymie Merritt (b) + Art Blakey (dr) and Walter Davis (p) on two tracks.... another superb assembling of "leftovers" - amazingly not released until 1970 - features again the "Witch Doctor" Messenger edition and this band is running hot .... Wayne Shorter excels both as composer (all tracks were written by him !!) + soloist and Lee Morgan is simply superb .... nice McMaster transfer from 1999 although the bass mapping (Jymie Merritt !!) is more successful on the japanese SHM-CD edition TYCJ-81094 from 2014 ....

I'll never forget tuning in to BBC Radio one Summer's evening in 1971 and hearing side one of the original LP being played in full. The album sounded so stunning back then, just as it does right now.

Both sleeves look so cool too!

"Columbia never believed in this album..." (according to the notes in The Complete Columbia Album Collection book).

(CD Blue Note Audio Wave AWMXR-0002) 2009 .... recorded July 14, 1960 .... Stanley Turrentine (ts) + Tommy Turrentine (tp) + Horace Parlan (p) + George Tucker (b) + Al Harewood (dr) ....sort of companion album to "On The Spur Of The Moment" (recorded some 8 months later) this is expectedly a classy effort ..... testament to the sparse but singularly effective George Tucker + Al Harewood rhythm backbone .... btw mastered by Alan Yoshida - full stop ....

(CD Blue Note Audio Wave AWMXR-0011) 2010 .... recorded January 8th, 1961 .... Jackie McLean (ts) + Freddie Hubbard (tp)+ Kenny Drew (p) + Doug Watkins (b) + Pete La Roca (dr) .... as good as Jackie McLean performs (and he really does) it is the Rhythm Section stealing the show here - one of the the strongest outings of Kenny Drew on Blue Note and the irresisteble drive by Watkins + La Roca is treasurable .... mastered by Alan Yoshida ....

A great album indeed. Agreed on the SHM DSD CDs (Prestige Chronicle Series) - they sound fantastic. Too bad Universal didn't follow through with it, I would have liked to see some 60's Prestige remastered.

Fingerpickin' - Wes Montgomery (Pacific Jazz) CD

Without ever hearing it this compilation has always appealed to me and this week I eventually got round to buying a copy and although there may not be as much fingerpickin' on it as expected I enjoyed it all nevertheless.

The first six tracks were originally issued on the LP The Montgomery Brothers And Five Others

Track 7 is taken from the World Pacific Jazz compilation...

Dixieland Jubilee (Vol. 2) - Kid Ory and his Creole Jazz Band / Albert Nicholas's Jazz Band (10" Vogue)

Kid Ory tracks dated 1949, Albert Nicholas ones are 1950.

From Sony's 20 CD Box JAZZ from America ON disques vogue This disc has t
wo Dixieland style 10" compilation albums on 1CD. Although I would never have had a great deal of interest in buying these albums as stand alone releases it is good to have them included in the box set. I particularly like the Lu Watters sessions.
