Would you sell a Beatles The Collection MFSL 14 LP Box Set?

I have debated thinning my record collection form 1962-present. I have a strong VG+ MFSL Beatles Collection Box. I have never listened to more than two LPs to date.

My wife says don't sell it as I will regret it.

It is on my Discogs catalog but not marked for sale.

Would you sell?

 

Mine will go to my grave with me. I love it!

 

I upgraded to a Project Extension 12 TT and have not listened on the new table. I found the ones I did listen to on the high end. The German pressing blew me away. Thanks for the reply.

I had it and sold it. The "blue box" and new mono set are perfect for me. I'll never get rid of them.

 

I was 13 when this came out, and I bought it by cashing in a bunch of savings bonds. I believe the as-new price was $325 in late 1982 when it came out. And I think I sold it for $800 around 2013. I haven't regretted it for a moment - but I am not a monster Beatles fan and I am not primarily a vinyl person.

And most importantly, that $800 I got around 2013 is just a hair over the inflation-adjusted value of the set's original price ($325 in '82 was worth about $785 in 2013).

Today, that $325 has an inflation-adjusted value of $845. So you'd have to sell it for about $850, net of shipping and eBay/PayPal/etc fees, just to break even.

If you love your set, and you are not hurting for cash, then I would say don't sell it. If you like your set but are willing to part with it for a good profit, then go ahead and try to sell it - but check completed eBay sales first, because if they're not selling for well over $850 on average, then you're not really going to make any profit.

 

I would say if you don't need the money, don't sell. Listen to the whole set once or twice, then think about selling if you don't like what you hear.

 

IMO, the best sounding version of the White Album...keep it! I sold mine years ago and have regretted it ever since...

I bought mine when it came out and have often considered selling it. It sits, collecting dust. I also own both the stereo and mono reissues, along with BC13 and many individual pressings. I don't listen to the Beatles as much as I did when I was younger, and when I do, somehow I always listen to other pressings than the MFSL. In fact, I don't think I've played it for enjoyment in a couple of decades. Any plays have been simply to compare it with other masters. I'm certain none of the records in the box have been played more than a ten times, with most of them played less than half of that. Especially considering its expense, any other record with those few plays would have been culled out of my collection long ago.

Maybe that's saying I wouldn't sell it. I obviously have thought about its worth to me a lot and haven't gotten rid of it. I'm pretty ruthless about culling my library, having removed at least 20% of the collection's albums over the years. The MoFi box has always remained. There's your answer.

I think the sound of the MFSL box gets kicked around unnecessarily. While I don't think its mastering is a unfiltered reflection of the master tape, it certainly isn't bad. It's just different. I have a lot of records in my collection that sound different.

Sold mine 20 years ago and got the same price as they seem to be selling for today.

 

If you never listen to it, then why keep it? In my opinion Beatles pricing has peaked or is peaking.. It will likely die down in the coming years as the generation that grew up on it fades..

Also I like the sound of the blue box better and it sells for 1/3'rd what the MFSL box goes for.. So you can always buy that if you regret..

 

yes Beatle prices apart from the very most sought after have peeked
