I'd use this to show off SACD:

    For vinyl, I'd use this:

For Redbook CD, I'd go with this:

    For HDCD/Audiophile/Redbook CD:

And, to close the session, for "audiophile vinyl"...

You have got a nice bunch of source.

This thread is not about CD vs Vinyl.

Last time I had a chance to play something to impress I guest, I played them Babylon Sisters, by Steely Dan from Gaucho, early Japan for USA, CSR hub.

The first time I had ever experienced a system/speaker demo, it was with Aja. Blew me away.

I'll use certain concert DVD's to demo my system. Roxy Music Live at the Apollo or either of the Porcupine concert DVD's does the trick.

    Interesting list.
Just curious as to why "100th Window" is on your list?
I could only listen to that album as a backdrop to watching industrial chimneys on a cold and rainy day. Its more for "What do you play to depress your guests" type thread ;)

I absolutely can't wait to play the following for my friend who LOVES the sound of "Digital '80's" recordings on his Vandersteen 1's or 2's and watch his jaw hit the frickin' floor, when he hears this. Although the following recording is not from the '80's it has a very '80's digital sound and this, in my opinion, is how good "digital" can sound if in the right hands, as opposed to some damn Duran Duran or crappy Phil Collins album sounds.

Turn it up and have fun ...

Heh - Communique by Dire Straits is probably my best sounding piece of vinyl. Only paid £3 for it, too.

I let the guy choose the music. Most people I know do not care about Avalon or Gaucho. And even find the music boring.

A good hifi system in a good sounding room will impress anybody profane to the audiophile world.

Even if they listen to a lo-fi norwegian black metal demo, or a cd of Death Magnetic by Metallica.

Just sit them on the sweet-spot and turn up the volume :righton:

Usually it's just family coming over and I won't bother trying to impress them. I used to put on Japanese Blue Note CDs for my father in law who's a Jazz musician. But he argued that he wasn't capable of listening to music for pleasure, only to study.

To show sound stage, detail, etc. I often go to Diana Krall, probably Live in Paris. To show them how it handles orchestral music Pictures at an Exhibition or Mahler’s fourth. To give them an OMG rock and roll experience I like Combination of the Two off of Cheap Thrills.

No one comes over to be impressed by my system. I don't invite people over to impress them with my system. We're together to enjoy each other's company and play whatever music that makes it more enjoyable.

Ya, I tried a comparison of the DSOTM CD vs the LP. Blew out both my woofers.... Heard a quick couple of thumps and saw a red circles flash through the grills and it was all over. I believe it was the CD that did it.

Even if you let guest select the music, you may offer some choices to select.

You can not have all the source they want unless you use online source like Tidal.
