You may be right. Looking at the case, it says "2005 Special edition" and "1988 Turner Preview Edition". The original theatrical release seems to get some criticism for not reflecting Peckinpah's intentions.

I just watched wild bunch recently 3 great scenes in that movie. Robert Ryan says to his gang of losers we are chasing MEN . that's a funny line.

Just watched OUATITW with the commentary. Had no idea how many specific homages it had to all the classic westerns (from IMDB):

    References
    The Iron Horse (1924)
    Jesse James (1939)
Frank's mannerism is heavily based on the character of Frank James. Both roles are played by henry Fonda.
The Return of Frank James (1940)
Frank's mannerism is heavily based on the character of Frank James. Both roles are played by henry Fonda.
    My Darling Clementine (1946)
The first confrontation between Doc Holliday and the Earps is referenced in Cheyenne and Harmonica's first meeting - right down to Morgan/Cheynne sliding the gun down the bar to Wyatt/Harmonica
    Pursued (1947)
Maureen McBain singing "Danny Boy" was cited by Leone as a reference to this film
    Ace in the Hole (1951)
Line: "How can you trust a man who wears both a belt and suspenders? The man can't even trust his own pants."
    High Noon (1952)
    Opening scene.
    Shane (1953)
Timmy McBain's 'hunting' early in the film mimics that of Joey Starrett.
    Ride, Vaquero! (1953)
The sequence where the horse carriage rides down a long road is exactly the same
    Johnny Guitar (1954)
Guitar used to announce - like harmonica and the buggy/horse ride through railroad workers. The character of Jill McBain and the subplot involving a railroad were inspired by the character Vienna of Johnny Guitar.
    Vera Cruz (1954)
In both films, Charles Bronson's character plays a harmonica and is only known by a nickname.
    The Searchers (1956)
    The Tall T (1957)
"You make good coffee [at least...]"
    3:10 to Yuma (1957)
    reference to jail
    The Bravados (1958)
"Who are you?" - dead men
    The Big Country (1958)
    Rio Bravo (1959)
    Warlock (1959)
Henry Fonda's outfit is taken from this movie
    The Magnificent Seven (1960)
Harmonica whittles away at a piece of wood, just like O'Reilly. Both are played by Charles Bronson.
    The Comancheros (1961)
Towards the start of "The Comancheros" (1961) there is a gun-runner called Ed McBain travelling to the town of Sweetwater. In "Once Upon a Time in The West", the family patriarch at the start of the movie is Brett McBain who, it transpires, intended to create a town called Sweetwater.
How the West Was Won (1962)
    The Leopard (1963)

Has anyone seen the 4K version of Butch and Sundance on itunes? Is it any good?
I haven't seen the film in almost 20 years but I don't feel like buying the blu-ray because it uses an old and very dated master.
Since it's the 5oth anniversary I'm hoping that it will be released in 4K and BD

It was the film to see 50 years ago. Though it didn’t appeal to me at the time. The thing that’s looks corny now ( even then ) is the push bike raindrops song scene.

1969 was a good year for westerns:

Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid
    Paint Your Wagon
    Support Your Local Sheriff
Tell Them Willie Boy Is Here
    True Grit
    The Wild Bunch

Each one a superior film and a box office hit except Willie Boy the sleeper in the group.

plus about 30 other westerns came out that year, not including foreign spags.

Just recently saw 'Run of the Arrow' for the first time. Great movie and kind of a different role for Rod Steiger. Sam Fuller sadly didn't make a lot of westerns, but both this and '40 Guns' were very good. I think his two-fisted pulp style was ideally suited to the Western genre.
