Sussudio: would've it been accepted if anyone but Phil Collins had sung it?

I’d like to hear Thom Yorke do a cover.

Man I hate that song - total earwig.

I'd say, the only thing Collins and McCartney have in common, is they were once in a movie together. ;) But, since the only place I run into anybody who even thinks about Paul on a year-to-year basis, it's more than likely Collins even being spoken about is just enough to irritate these folks who feel discussions like this are just a waste of brain cells that could have otherwise been used talking about McCartney.

Is there anybody from that era who ignites such a derision on this board out of one song, with a steady catalog of quality songwriting successes behind them? Ya know, Amy Grant is a respected artist with a tremendous reputation for her work...BUT, she DID put out a single once outside of her niche called, "Baby, Baby", so perhaps we should start a thread to bash that one for being vapid and unworthy of her best work.

I'm doing a Genesis thread at the moment, and it has left me feeling quite defensive toward Phil .... so much unnecessary dislike lol

Now that was even worse than su-su-su-susudio lol

  6. I'm just not much of a fan of the song. I like Phil's voice and don't think I would enjoy the song with another singer.

well, not sure how I can satisfy you in regards to a song about a meaningless word. Let me just describe to you how the song makes me feel. It's like one of those jingles that if it sticks in your head you'd practically get a lobotomy in order to extract it.

My theory on the song. They were goofing around in the studio. He did this lame song called "In The Studio" Which they realized was way too contrived to be a releasable song, so he changed it to SuSuSudio. Dumb.

It is supposed to be representative of a girls name .... the whole song revolves around that idea.
It's fine to not like the song, but just because you don't like the name chosen hardly makes it stupid.
Do you go up to girls named Delores, Sinita or Daphne or something and just say "you're stupid"?

well as the listener I get to decide if that works for me. It doesn't. Actually it absolutely amazes me that anyone would go so far out on a limb to defend this tragically weak song.

"Sussudio" is also the only song on the album (and the majority of his solo career to that point) that wasn't downbeat or thoughtful in some way; even though it's his most upbeat album. Even casual fans knew at the time that it wasn't all that typical.

All I've done is stated my distaste for the song. Do you normally expect everyone to like every song you develop an unhealthy fondness for?

A couple of interesting lists... a Rolling Stone readers' poll ranking Phil's top songs:
Readers’ Poll: The 10 Best Phil Collins Songs – Rolling Stone

    5. Take Me Home
    4. Easy Lover
    3. I Don't Care Any More
    2. Against All Odds (Take a Look at Me Now)

And a list of the top-downloaded Phil songs in the digital era:
Phil Collins' biggest hits of the digital age revealed

    4. You'll Be in My Heart
    3. Easy Lover

Both lists seem to have a pretty even mix of upbeat songs and those sappy ballads everyone seems to hate.

and again you are avoiding the point.... or didn't even bother to read what I wrote ...

It isn't a favourite song of mine, but it's ok.

You stated that it is stupid because of the name.

I also stated that it is fine if you don;t like the song but ...

I stated that it is purely representative of a girls name, and on that point do you go up to girls with unusual names and call them stupid.

So where you got the mumbo jumbo from, I am not altogether sure

Not sure Phil's thing with nonsensical words. I guess he's been doing it all his life, though.

    In The Air Tonight
    This Must Be Love
The Roof is Leaking/Droned/Hand In Hand
    I Missed Again
    I Don't Care Anymore
    I Cannot Believe Its True
    Thru These Walls
    Long Long Way To Go
    Who Said I Would
    Inside Out
    Take Me Home
    Hang In Long Enough
I Wish It Would Rain Down
    Another Day In Paradise
    Dance Into The Light
    Wear My Hat

But I am still familiarising myself with the albums after But Seriously

The Billboard chart tells another story, with sappy ballads taking the top 5 spots based solely on Billboard's measure of "chart performance" and "In the Air Tonight" not showing up until #15.
