'Tone Poet' Jazz Reissue Series*

Discussion in 'Music Corner' started by cds23, Dec 23, 2018.

  1. Thanks for the tip. I had been repeatedly looking it up on Spotify due to its prohibitive cost and had recently given up. It’s going to be my work commute soundtrack tomorrow.

As this is the Tone Poet thread, I will restate that the Chick Corea LP is just absolutely sublime. I have played it five times through in the last 24 hours. I just can’t get enough of how incredible this reissue sounds. You can truly picture Corea’s hands gliding over the keys. I’ve got Etcetera on the way, and I’m definitely grabbing more than a handful of the Tone Poet releases over the next year...and hopefully beyond!

Now the Side Ends, Now He Flips,

My replacement Etcetera is due to be delivered tomorrow. I look forward to hearing it. I didn't want to take the chance of playing the defective one since the scratch was such a gash I didn't want to take the chance of playing that part accidentally and taking an expensive cartridge out with it, especially one I don't own yet. :yikes:

Sorry you had a defect Josquin. RTI is truly excellent, but this being a mechanical process, very occasionally a problem happens. Sorry it happened to you!

Problems happen, but it only takes 2-3 seconds at most to check for obvious scratches on the disc.

And how does it sound, particularly given our expectations from other work that y'all have done previously?

To say I'm excited about this would be an understatement. We actually had to recut one of the sides .... they are that dynamic. And this has resulted in a delay, meaning that Sam Rivers Contours will come out on its own in March. Universal was not thrilled about this but we do not make any compromises in the Tone Poet program. I think you'll hear why, when this comes out.

At least that's better than the Neil Young Porno Pono thread!

Played Etcetera on Friday when I first received it, and it sounded as good as any Music Matters LP, which is a fantastic value at this price point. My copy of NHS, NHS had some nasty ground-down outer edges on one side that would have caused bad noise if the stylus weren't placed in exactly the right spot, so I put in for a replacement through Amazon. The replacement arrived today and like everyone else here said, I was blown away by the sound quality and how great of an album this is. The only other copy of this album I have is 1988 Blue Note/Capitol CDP 7 90055 2 "digitally remixed by Michael Cuscuna and Malcom Addey," which sounds uninvolving and just dead by comparison. I always thought I just didn't like this album, but in retrospect I think the lackluster sound quality was responsible.

Contours and Glamoured are preordered. Fuchsia Swing Song is an absolute mother and I was ecstatic when Music Matters released it, and now I'm just as happy knowing Contours is on its way. Thanks Joe (and Kevin and Don)!!!

Hopefully. As much as like Wayne’s music, I’m not interested in a comic book he wrote which is a not insignificant part of the price for the Emanon set. Just give me the music at a fair price.

You beat me to it! I'm a big Wayne fan but this is the first time I've heard etc. yes the melodies start exactly the same! Good ear dude!

My copies of both records came without any flaws in media or packaging. Thanks Joe Harley! Etc sounds great and the ballad is my favorite track. The piano sounds beautiful on this remaster. I haven't played the Corea yet but I have a well played orignal so I'm excited to compare. :)

I think you mean to say groove echo, not crosstalk? Anyway I hope your replacement comes in nice shape!

I just saw that in order to get a vinyl version of Emanon (which won a Grammy last night), it'll cost you $150 on Amazon. It's part of a fancy box set.

I do hope Blue Note will release it as a stand-alone.

When I first saw this being released, was more than ready to take a chance until I saw it was only (boxed) with 3 CD's as well. I would surely think now that it has won, we should see more friendly alternatives becoming available?

The last line in Fremer's review of this release is just classic, one of his best!

No worries @Joe Harley. I'm mostly pretty lucky with new and used records, but it happens.

I enjoyed the Chick Corea immensely. I just his trio a few months and ago and always enjoy it. I look forward to giving the Shorter a spin tonight. Can't wait for Sam Rivers next month.

After dropping the needle on side 2 of Etcetera I felt like I was in the middle of a Shorter Quartet live performance. Barracudas just jumps out of the speakers into the room. What wonderful playing and equally wonderful recording and pressing.

    Joe, kudos on this release.

Playing Shorter's ETC. for the second time. I don't have any other copy of this album on any format, but this sounds amazing. The level of detail on this LP is unbelievable.

My ETC arrives tomorrow. Can't wait to spin it. These two seem like a heck of a kick off to this project!
