This month in Uncut magazine, Allan Jones says Hamell On Trial are currently bigger than Queen.

  6. With the right director, approach and marketing push, I'm sure a certain quartet frequently mentioned in this forum would reclaim the top spot from Queen, though I'd happily put both in my top five list regardless of such arguments. Then again, outside of a few mostly decent officially sanctioned documentaries, it should be noted that Bohemian Rhapsody was the first proper biopic on its subject, while The Beatles have been treated to quite a few, yet I can't imagine the likes of Backbeat or Nowhere Boy making that much of an impact overall...

That's not what I'm talking about. I'm not a big fan either. But the completely overshadowed The Beatles after Freddie's death and especially now, after the Bohemian Rhapsody global hysteria.

To help get on the same page, what do you mean by “biggest?”

If you ask a bunch of teenagers and maybe some idiots in their 20s who pay no attention to music, yes.

They weren't in the 70s or 80s, they aren't now. Even in comparison to some more modern bands, still no.

They might be the biggest right now if you go by all those free Spotify accounts and statistics based on playing 30 seconds counting the same as playing the whole thing. Actual record sales...not even close.

Oh, sorry. At the moment, I'd even say yes. Because, no matter what many here would say, many people my age (around 20 years old, so those who are most likely to shape the cultural landscape during the next couple of years) know little more of the classic rock bands than Queen. They get massive radio exposure, their music is used in commercials, shows, movies and video games, the movie was massive and Freddie sees new prominence as a cultural icon. He truly fits into modern zeitgeist by challenging traditional views of masculinity. So yes, Queen might as well be the biggest band right now, and why not? Not a fan, but it could be much worse than that.

They've probably overtaken The Beatles but not Pink Floyd or Led Zep

As a huge fan, I have to say of course not, but they are one of them and time isn't diminishing their popularity. There's not many 45 year old bands you can say that about.

One of my points is Queen is mega huge among casual fans who own and know only Greatest Hits comps and among youngsters who never even bought a single physical record in their life. And in the third world countries where most people don't even listen to rock. For Christ sake Bohemian Rhapsody video has 842 million (!!!) views on youtube!

Maybe as the most popular band right now, but not as 'the biggest band of all time', I don't think.

Good grief, can't we stop with these 3 new Queen threads per day?

How many posts will it take before this thread becomes another Beatles vs. Queen thread? (And how many pages will it take this time before the thread gets locked?)
