Thanks, but the taste of my contemporaries (or, anybody I meet for that matter) doesn't really move me. All I know is I have a broader taste and knowledge than many people I know in person. But I can't expect everyone out there to have that kind of musical interest and that's just fine by me.

But this list is for US sales. It might look a little different in other parts of the world.

    Biggest as in popular, yes

Biggest as in greatest, no. See... “Hot Space”.

It's funny how all the dismissive NO posts come from folks in US or Canada.

By the way, history has shown us that we should never measure greatness by popularity. The Velvet Underground, Nick Drake, Love anyone?

Make a bland Beatles movie but shoehorn as many hits in as possible and watch it make big money.

Most people who experienced the 70s will remember that Queen was one of the top bands but there were so many huge bands they kind of were just part of the arena circuit along with Kansas, Jethro Tull, Cheap Trick, Genesis, Foreigner, Styx, Journey etc. Granted they continued to have hits into the 80s but they were always a tier below the huge legends like The Beatles, The Stones, The Who and Zeppelin. It's taken some mighty creative revisionism to somehow paint them onto the Mount Rushmore of rock.

I'm talking ONLY about popularity and global recognition among billions of normal people (not music die-hards like us). As I said earlier I'm not a big fan myself these days.

Biggest band from the UK? No.
Biggest band from the '70s? Also no.

Well, we all have our own Mount Rushmores but if you take a global survey I bet that the ratio of people who know Queen compared to The Who is 10 to 1 if not a lot higher. And that's exactly what this thread is about.

Well, no. “All time” considers 20th century (when they debuted) and today, so the answer is still “no”, because before 2018 they didn’t have the same status as they do now.

No. Beatles Stones and LZ are ahead in sales. Queen didn't have such a big impact in USA which is biggest market. They probably get more media impact due to musical and current film. Brian and Roger do a good job of maintaining publicity for a band that effectively died in 1991. Some would call that milking.

I don't know. In my mind the Beatles will always be the biggest band; but if it's just about popularity, I wouldn't mind if other band (Queen or whoever) takes that place. If that's the case, perhaps it's a good notice, since it may disminish the blind hate the Fab Four usually receive just because of the high place they are in.

    Oh, come on.
You're so polite. Of course, it's only US record sales that count, not the 194 other countries on this planet. Forgot about that!

they might be the most overrated band of all-time....and i'm saying that as a fan.
i cringe whenever someone in this board lumps them alongside Big 5 (Beatles, Stones, Zep, Floyd & Who)....again, as a fan.
