well I'm happy for you that you both found a song you love so deeply and believe that the world clamors for this song as much as you do. Keep the dream.

 

It's better than "Whodunnit?", I'll say that for it.

 

Paperlate is a masterpiece. But Phil would have never allowed those keyboards chords under the melody in one of his solo albums.

 

If you have read the thread, you know that people aren't just saying they don't like the song ... it's all about character assassination and hyperbole

Gabriel was aiming for the Top 10 by the time of So. Maybe not "selling out," but he definitely wanted a piece of that action. Ditto, Hackett with GTR.

 

That's surprising. I'm one of the people who doesn't like Phil, but that's an excellent and inventive record.

 

I agree with you implicitly...........but let's stick with criticizing the music, and stop with the personal attacks.

 

Sledgehammer song and video is as commercial as it gets.

This was discussed a bit earlier in the thread, but at the time in the US, top 40 was not the dominant radio format. It was rock, a.k.a. AOR. For instance KMET was #2 in Los Angeles (behind a talk radio station on AM.) And in Boston, where I was at the time, we had WCOZ, which had the motto "Kick ASS Rock and Roll - NO DISCO!" That station was the #1 station not just in Boston, but the entire country.

Phil's In the Air Tonight hit #2 on Billboard's "Mainstream Rock" Chart. So it was a hit where it mattered, though it really gained stature when it was then played daily for the next 20 years.

Peter Cetera deserves it. He's not as great a bassist in the history of bass guitarist as Phil Collins is in the history of rock and jazz drummers.

 

It's very surprising, or sad, the amount of venom musical artists in general receive on a music forum.

 

It was a pretty creative video that worked. Nothing wrong with that.

Yup, he clearly wanted to expand his audience. For the "Conspiracy of Hope" Tour, he was dipping his feet in the waters of stadium-level. Then further adulation by hanging with Hollywood starlit, Rosanna Arquette.

Except for his first solo album, which is one of my all time favourite albums, I tend to agree with you.

This is a "Sussudio" thread, but people might (or might not) find this interesting about In the Air. The first video played on MTV was, as many people know, the Buggles. (Back when MTV was simply videos 24/7.)

The 22nd video played on that first day was, apparently, In the Air Tonight, which would have been about a year old at the time.
