How many artists have ownership of their masters? I only know of a few, but maybe it's not as rare as I'm thinking...

    (1) Nancy Sinatra (at the urging of her Father)
    (2) Joan Jett
    (3) Valli/Four Seasons Partnership
    (4) Johnny Mathis (I think)

I read where George Clinton says He retained the masters to Funkadelic/Parliament, though he does not legally have ownership rights, if anyone knows, please post...can't name anymore off hand...anyone else?

David Bowie (or does he at the moment?)

Barry and Robin Gibb (The Bee Gees)

Buck passed away; no idea of the present. Same of Ray Charles and his post-Atlantic catalog.

    Ouch

Buck and Ray's respective estates control the rights to the catalogs. David Bowie does control his catalog but has an exclusive deal with EMI.

Metallica supposedly makes a whopping $4 per copy sold! Good for them.

    Don't forget:

Aerosmith (somehow they managed to negotiate this back when they were almost dropped after their first album)
    David Bowie (I think)
    Frank Zappa estate

I believe the Pretty Things own their masters. Maybe they would like to license them out to AF and Steve could work some of his magic.... :D

I know Anka owns his ABC-Paramount stuff, but the RCA and UA stuff too?

Pat Metheny (I think). Don't know about his early ECM recordings, but I seem to remember reading he owns the masters of material he recorded for Geffen, since he's able to re-release it on his new label, Nonesuch, now.

I believe Curtis Mayfield owned most of his when he passed.

Is there something I don't know about George Clinton? When he is referred to as "he" it is capitalized?

Anthrax walked out of their deal with Elektra with the master tapes to Sound of White Noise and Stomp 442.
They re-released these records on a different label a few years later. These were remastered (not well). A side note question: why would they be remastered (it wasn't a big selling point)? A rights issue? Elektra "owns" the earlier master (even though they let them go out-of-print)?

I think Pete Townshend owns the rights to his solo recordings...which would explain why albums on three different labels were reissued recently on Hip-O.

I believe Zappa owned his masters, with the exception of the Angel/EMI recordings.

    How about Paul Simon?
